10.5 - Speakeasy
The 18th Amendment was ratified on Jan 16, 1919 and signaled the beginning of Prohibition, the Jazz Age, and the Roaring 20’s. The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment on December 5, 1933.
Read a book first published during the era: 1919-1933
OR
set during the era- 1919, 1920’s or 1930’s for a significant portion of the book
These lists may help (but make sure your book fits) America Between the Wars, Europe Between the Wars, Best Books of the Decade: 1920’s, 1920's Mysteries
Required: If the time period is not evident in the book’s GR description state how the book fits the task when you post.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Yeah it's new task day. Probably for the mods it is oh no not again but for me it is Christmas come early. :)

I wanted to get this one OK'd.

The Confession (Inspector Ian Rutledge, #14) by Charles Todd The Confession by Charles Todd

It mentions five years earlier during the Great War. This is book 14 in the series and the war has ended in book 1 of the series. This was off the 1920's mystery list.

Chapter 1 intro: The Essex Marshes, Summer 1915
Chapter 2 intro: London, Summer 1920

It looks like Chapter 1 sets up events for the rest of the book. If you find that to be true, it works

(And I feel a little like Santa on task day- tired, but glad everyone is excited)

Felina | 0 comments Would Empire State work for this task? It does take place during prohibition in New York but it also involves an alternate reality New York where there are super hero's. I do know the main character is a noir detective that frequents speak easy's. I just wanted to make sure it doesn't have to be a realistic portrayal of the prohibition era.

maybe- it depends on how "culminating in the Boston Police Strike of 1919" is treated- a page, a chapter, more? From the description it sounds as if this book covers the events preceding the era. If you scan the book you might be able to tell.

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments This book takes place beginning in 1924, but it takes place on Mt. Everest and in Tibet, and has little or nothing to do with prohibition.

Rochella (rosesbookgarden) | 109 comments Hi, I would like to read Brideshead Revisited, but it doesn't say on the GR page the story is set during the '20s. On this site is a summary saying it does take place in that era http://www.shmoop.com/brideshead-revi.... I hope it's okay.

That should work- when you post include how the book fits the task

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I've had this one on my TBR pile for a while, but thought I better get approval since it might not entirely be in the spirit of the task.

The story entirely takes place in London in 1924- using the after effects Great War and the Russian Revolution as part of the story.

Doctor Who: The Clockwise Man

Sure, the task asks for a book set during the era- 1919, 1920’s or 1930’s and 1924 works

message 30: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda | 56 comments Would either of these titles work for the Speakeasy task?

The Holy Thief Set in 1936 Moscow

Only Time Will Tell The 4th paragraph of the description on the GR page says this "This introductory novel in Archer’s ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler’s Germany."

Thanks in advance!

It looks like both would work.

Only Time Will Tell "covers the years from 1920 to 1940". From the description it looks like the 20's and 30's are the significant portion.

Coralie Would Out of Africa work? it covers her years in Africa, which (as far as I can make out) were 1914 to 1931. Although some of it was during the war, the majority was after it.
