TaxpayersMoney | 3 comments I've read Saturn's Children and quite enjoyed it. Can anyone recommend which to read next? I like Banks and Baxter if that helps.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 292 comments The first Stross I read was Accelerando - a fantastic novel about the information singularity (shades of Cory Doctorow or Neal Stephenson, perhaps), and I became an instant fanboy.

My next discovery was The Atrocity Archives - squamous monstrosities from beyond meet a spy novel cum civil service bureaucracy, utterly superb.

Singularity Sky is Big Science Fiction, in the vein of Banksie or Alastair Reynolds or Neal Asher, also excellent.

I've also got The Family Trade and Glasshouse lined up, so I'll let you know about those :)

TaxpayersMoney | 3 comments Thanks for the tips! Accelerando sounds like a good place to start.

Martin | 8 comments Stross writes in several different genres, so there is a lot a variety, but I love all his work (although I haven't got around to starting the Family Trade / Merchant Princes series yet).

I would also recommend Singularity Sky if you are a fan of Banks. It's a really good space opera. The follow up Iron Sunrise isn't quite as good.

The Atrocity Archives are brilliant, the adventures of Bob Howard who works for The Laundry, a secret government department which deals with both Lovecraftian horrors, and the HR department.

There is also the Halting State series which are set in the near future, and deal with ideas around how the internet will change society. The premise of Halting State was a robbery of currency from an online game. This has since happened in real life.

This probably isn't much help. I'm basically saying that in my opinion, it doesn't matter what you read next, because it's all really good.

Generally agreed all round - Stross is brilliant most of the time.
Personally I couldn't get on with the "Family Trade" series - but I liked the 'Laundry' series (properly, the Atrocity Archives), and Singularity Sky et seq. - and I REALLY liked Halting State - and the sequel (Rule 34) is even better.

This obviously doesn't help narrow it down but my favorite is Glasshouse so far.
