If I read a book and it is moved from TBR to READ, then the position number of the following books changes. If I pre-plan my books, then do I need to pre-plan ALL the books in order to not get lost in the TBR? Am I making sense?"
Perfect sense, Bea... I know it's a little confusing!
Say you're going by Addition, you've planned the first 10 books to read. Your 10th book is (currently) number 56 of your GR to-read shelf. Make a note what books are around this 10th book so you can go back to roughly the same position for your next planning.
Say, you're nearly finished your 10th book (it's out of your to-read and on currently-reading), find that book on either #55 or #57 and start counting again from there.
The best thing to do would probably to screen print (Ctrl + alt + print screen) the page that shows your 10th book when you're first planning so you can see what other books are on the page and which one you haven't actually read (in case, you've read #55 & #57 too) that you could use to count for next stage.
Does that help?

Sorry, Bea... I keep forgetting to reserve a spot after the 'rules' etc. Hope you don't mind me deleting your original comment.
Thanks :)
Thanks :)

Yes. I think the screen shot is a good idea because I am always reading books off the TBR for other challenges too. That is what finally did in my pre-planning last time! LOL

No problem.
Well, after all that discussion, I realized that my age is high enough that going through the regular TBR in planning would only result in 11 books. Therefore, my plan stands even if books move positions! LOL!

I'm right there with you, Bea! Think I'll go with the addition format, though, and just start my count again when I get to the end.

Buffalo Girls - finished in Jan 2015
Invention of Clouds
My goal for the year is to read 10 of my TBRs.

lol - hence the option for progression ;)
though it's also there, if you wanted more of a challenge as it will result in more books to be read.

TBR Moving Mountains 2014
Using A. Addition:
The Bird Sisters
The German Mujahid
Burned
->
Running the Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian
The Bone House
Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance: A Mystery
A Share In Death
Ghost at Stallions Gate
->
The Boy in the Suitcase
The Thirteenth Child
Immoral
A Cold Day For Murder
A House to Let
Using A. Addition:
I've decided to use this challenge to tackle books I physically own at home as I seem to keep collecting at a faster pace than my reading of it!
My bookshelf is sorted by alphabetical (author's surname) & size of books. Using Progression, just from the top shelf, I've got 14 books to read!
Edited: I've a very long list elsewhere but I'll only note those I've read here... have also amended my goal to 50 due to my circumstances this year ;)
Cecilia Read 08/27
Gone Girl Read 06/18
Bitter Greens Read 06/19
Drive By Read 07/21
The Bronze Horseman Read 07/30
The White Earth Read 08/06
The Fiery Heart Read 08/11
The Swan Kingdom Read 08/22
The Divinity of Dogs Read 09/02
One Hundred Names Read 10/23
A Confusion of Princes Read 11/05
Lick Read 12/08
What Alice Forgot Read 12/21

Since progression would result in 73 books for me, which is a tad unrealistic, I'm starting off planning addition and subtraction both, which gives 8 books. I'll decide whether I want to do more after I do those. That gives me:
✔Captain_Alatriste - finished 1/14
the-price-of-oranges
✔Thirty_Three_Teeth - finished 11/17
The_Speed_of_Dark
Fearless
✔ The_Blood_of_Flowers - finished 1/1
the-unincorporated-man
completed 3/8

I am going to see if I can do this. I am using my age, my to-read-mine shelf, and Addition, which will give me 16 books as it stands today. That should do me for 2014 at least. If I get to the end and I have added books to the list, I will continue with those.

I am there with you, too, Bea. I was able to go through my whole to-read-mine list as it now stands and only have 16 books, so I planned them all. :) If I decide to continue after that, I will pick a new number or something.

Tien - dumb question, but if I plan the books in advance, are we supposed to read them in order? I'm thinking yes, but thought I would check.
nope, you don't have to read them in order. just like I told Bea, take a screen print of your last book's page so you know approximately where you're at for your next planning, if you get there ;)

Another neat title on your list...I think number 9 is really an interesting title. Have you ever read People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks? The main character is a person who restores ancient manuscripts and she finds all kinds of interesting things between the pages of the book she is working on. That always fascinated me.

I'm using the progression method, and since I'll be 33 this year that makes it extra easy to count by threes. :) I won't get through my whole list, but I'm going to try to get through 33 to match my age. Also I skipped my first 10 since I plan to do the Lost challenge too.

How are people going with this? Doesn't look like many of you are updating your list? I'm doing very very poorly myself, eek, and we're nearly halfway through the year!

How to Play:
1. Order your GR TBR by Position*.
*As you add books onto your TBR, GR would usually place that book on the last numerical position on your TBR and this will not change unless you manually alter the position number yourself. Therefore, to play this game, you can’t really mess with the position numbers.
2. This year will be a play on ages.
Easiest to explain by way of example.
I will be turning 34 in 2014.
3 Alternate ways to pick books to read (pick one which will suit you and the number of 'to-read' books you have):
A. Addition
To read book at position that is multiple of age.
So I'll be reading books in positions: 34, 68, 102, 136,...
B. Progression
To read book at position that is progression of each digit in age.
So I'll be reading books in positions: 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, (12), 15, 16, 18, 20,...
If there are numbers that coincide, ignore the second time you come across it
C. Subtraction
Working it backwards. So if I have 350 books on my shelf I would be reading books in positions: 316, 282, 248...
(350-34=316; 316-34=282, 282-34-248, etc)
Challenge to officially start 1 January 2014. Books must be pre-planned when joining in challenge and cannot change (as positioning in GR to-read changes as books are being read throughout the year). Remember / record the last book's position you read from
You absolutely DO NOT have to disclose your age. Just post the books you are set to read.
Additional Rules / Clarifications
*If you don’t keep a ‘to-read’ shelf on GR, feel free to create a ‘to-read’ list yourself, if you’d like to join in. You would have to number the books accordingly.
*Feel Free to PLAN ahead but remember to count position from your last book's position (which positions may have changed as books are being read throughout the year)
*Only 2 caveats to substituting books:
1. It's a later book in the series.
You can read the earlier book in same series
2. you absolutely cannot get your hands on it (without spending money that you do not want to spend). Then, you have the discretion to substitute with books of either:
*same number of pages, or
*same year of publication, or
*same author.
*If there is a book you absolutely cannot finish, I would count that as 'completed' as you'd take it out of your 'to-read'.
Note: this will not be counted in the widget, unfortunately. So if you want your widge to read 'completed', you're welcome to either:
1. update the number of books you've committed to read for the challenge (I know, this is fudging!)
2. substitute with a book of your choice.
This is an open ended sort of challenge BUT if you like having goals and seeing your progress during the year, I've set up [Challenge Widget: TBA]
