I'm just curious to know if people have self control or not.
Here is my question:

Do you read a book from page 1 to last or do you sometimes cheat and peak at the last pages before you actually reach the end?

With paperbacks I used to always check the end. With Ebooks, it's not as easy so I don't do it, but it still eats me up inside that I can't cheat.

G.G! I can't believe you would ask that! I mean can't believe you would honestly peek at the last chapter that's terrible...

I do it all the time ._.



but mostly with mainstream novels. With Ebooks, if you haven't got me by chapter two, you havent got me at all :3

Oh! Now I feel normal again! My hubby keeps bugging me with his "You cheated and checked the end, AGAIN?" famous sentence.

Maybe that's why I do it with prints and not ebooks. However, I don't do it to check if I am going to like it or not. I do it because I can't stand the not knowing. So obviously I do it more with horror or suspense genre (and fantasy... oh and sci-fi... and thriller...) hmm Maybe I should just state that I don't do it with romance, because those are usually very predictable but I do, or rather used to do it, with everything else.

I used to do it with Sherrlyin Kenyon novels, I was far too young to read them really. (my twilight lol) I wasn't interested in the kinky bits at all, I used to check the end just to see who lived lol.

I havent read one for years but I've heard that the new Styxx one is bloody horrendous! :x

Would you believe I've never read that series? I got some catching up to do...

Eh, 14 year old me thought they were great. The cast is pretty good, but the last two books she's done... Well, to put it simply, the two hottest guys have been continously bonked without consent through out the novels. Dunno if I want to read that tbh lol

I never skip ahead that far---sometimes if I'm on the top of a left page, I find myself reading the middle paragraph on the right page first... :3

@Josh, that's me too. I'll look over to the other page and suddenly catch myself. On occasion I'll look at the last sentence.

I used to read the very last sentence of a book before beginning. I don't do it anymore. Usually I had no context to relate it to, so it never really revealed anything. Now I have to force myself to finish what I started reading first rather than putting it to the side and picking up a book that I just got and am really excited about. I got a book today that is based off a JJ Abrams idea that has 2 people communicating with each other in the margins of the book. It comes with a bunch of inserts of notes they share with each other as they pass the book back and forth. I really want to read it now, but I just started another book that I have been wanting to read for a while. Not enough hours in the day!

@Brian, totally. I wish there were more hours in the day or that I could watch a movie and read a book at once, or read and write at the same time.

So does that make me weird for never skipping ahead to the end of a book? Shoot! And here I thought I was the normal one.

That being said, I have read a few series out of order. I never used to buy books, instead grabbing whatever I could find at the library, so if there was a specific series (or author) I wanted to read and the library didn't happen to have book 1, I'd skip ahead to book 2 or 3. If I liked it, I'd shop around until I found the books that came before it.

The only reason I look to the end is to find out how many pages there are so I know when I'm getting close to the end. I hate to know what's coming, I value the surprise of it.

I don't cheat and look to the end with books, but I'm ALWAYS "spoilering" myself with the TV shows that my husband and I watch. (For instance, we watched all the Star Trek shows, and I ended up finding out that one of my favorite characters dies. Man, was I mad.)

I'm so silly because I hate spoilers, but I always put myself in situations (like going to a Wiki page, for instance) where I find stuff I don't want to know.

Somehow I've managed not to find out who the mother is on How I Met Your Mother. AND NOBODY TELL ME. (We're in season 8... I think it's coming soon...)

Oh for tv show, my husband is BAD... we're watching shows and he goes and check the internet to see if it says who the villain is, who dies ect.

When I try to change the subject because sometimes, I prefer not knowing, he gets mad.

So far, he's been looking for who Red John. (The fans of that specific show will know what I'm talking about.)
He's also always coming home with news about Walking dead and who died. We are a season behind thanks to Netflix. I answer him: If you know, don't tell me because if I learn my favorite died, I'm done watching!

So yes, I sneak at the end of the book but not enough to learn anything important, or at least too important. Often, the sneaking led me to believe something totally different until I actually finished the book.

I never intentionally spoil tv shows for myself, but sometimes I'll go on IMDb and accidentally catch a glimpse of how many episodes a cast member happens to be in. If it seems really short, my suspicions about their future are roused. I wish they hid that information better.

I usually don't; however, there is the occasional time I do. For instance If i want to see if something is really worth reading I skip to the last page (Pretty sure I did that for the Hunger Games) or if I just really can't believe a story is going a certain way and I want to see if it changes or if the author is just throwing me through a loop, I do (I did this for The Mortal Instruments).

I'm really boring. I have too much self control by the sounds of things. I never look ahead or try and peek. For me the not knowing is a big part of the thrill ... it's not often I'm in danger of being too straight laced - lol :3

NONE! If the book doesn't grab me in the first 2-3 paragraphs, I have to go to the end if there is any hope of saving it. Sometimes that will work..sometimes not. But then I don't write my novels chronologically either. I write by scene, and sometimes I have to write scenes far ahead of where I'm currently at in order to stay focused on where I'm headed. My son calls it ADD -- I call it creative writing LOL

I write in a really random order so I guess it makes sense when I skip/peek ahead :p

If a book doesn't grab me in the first page, I give up. I don't skip ahead. Openings are supposed to grab your attention. Right? If they don't, it's unlikely the rest of the story will. Most of the books I read now are ebooks on Amazon, so I determine whether or not I'll buy and read it based on the free excerpt. If I buy it, there's a 90% probability I'll finish reading the book.

A lot of books recently haven't grabbed my attention in the first chapter, but then I've still liked the story. I like to give things a chance sometimes :]

@Bisky, I probably should give books more of a chance, but I'm just really, REALLY impatient. I have dozens of books on my to-read list and a limited amount of reading time at my disposal.

No, no way, never. I enjoy reading a book from beginning to the end, no matter how bad, or good it is. In fact I go to the extent of not reading reviews, all of the back of the book, or an extended descriptions, just so i don't know what's going to happen. Mainly this is because i like going through the twists and turns of getting to the end, but also because I like seeing how long it takes me to get there before the author takes me there. the longer it takes me the better i enjoy the book, except when the author throws in this big monkey wrench right at the end that you couldn't have possibly seen coming because they gave you no clues to it at all throughput the rest out the book.

I do think having a really big list to read does limit me on how patient I'll be with a story.

I'd die before peeking at the end of a book. Spoilers are the bane of my existence. :P

I only care about the spoilers for the end of Mangas and films ._.

I don't skip ahead. Good reads make me want to enjoy each page.

Now I feel odd. Well, not too odd, since some of you don't skip either. Like Harmony, not knowing is a big part of the thrill for me.

My trouble is that I don't even want to know about the books I'm writing! It takes the fun out of the first draft. I'm a pantser and I figure I can always fix it later if it needs to be fixed. This is going to become a problem, though, since I'm writing a YA series and I don't know how many books it will be yet, or how the whole thing will end! @_@

Ahh I cant do that! I have to plan it completely ._.

I can't plan ahead either. Sure, I have a few ideas. I'm thinking things ahead such as if the story goes this direction, I will end it that way etc., but my protagonist is stubborn and so far he has chosen his own endings. (Does that make any sense at all?)

I skipped to the end while reading the last Divergent book and sobbed without mercy when I read that

I check how many pages it has then plough through it. The only thing I can remember skimming in a long tie was Hilary Mantel's A Place of Greater Safety. I love her other books but there were whole aspects of this - mainly the domestic lives of the Danton, Robespierre and Desmoulins - which I thought the narrative could have done without.
