Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments It's okay, Nancy. I understand completely!

Use the numbers of the edition you are reading. If you are reading an ebook or audiobook that doesn't have page numbers, use the hardcover edition on Goodreads.

message 302: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks, Janice.

message 303: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Just to complicate matters I just copied this from the Amazon website for The Golem and the Jinni -

File Size: 873 KB
Print Length: 819 pages
Page Numbers Source ISBN: 0062253824
Publisher: Harper (April 23, 2013)
Sold by: HarperCollins Publishers

But I also got page numbers from Goodreads for 486, if I remember correctly and somewhere else for 512. I am glad to see my eyes aren't failing me just yet.

All together while I still have time I may very well change this book to something else but like dominoes changing one book may alter my reading plans and my head hurts from trying to make connections. LOL

message 304: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Ok - what does one do -

from the Amazon website I just saw the following for The Golem and the Jinni

Hardcover is 496 pages
Paperback is 512 pages
Kindle edition at a whopping 819 pages

I have the kindle edition downloaded soooooooo. I may just change books for this entry. It would make things easier, huh? LOL

message 305: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think kindle uses actual e-book pages to come to 806, whereas with most ereaders you remain at page 12 for 3 pages (does that make sense?), just because less fits on a screen than on a book page.

I suppose that's why we look at hardcover pages when reading an e-book :)

Sarah | 18550 comments Peggy wrote: "I think kindle uses actual e-book pages to come to 806, whereas with most ereaders you remain at page 12 for 3 pages (does that make sense?), just because less fits on a screen than on a book page...."

Actually the same happens on kindle - sometimes I can be on page 4 for 2 pages due to the size of the text while others use actual ebook pages - I think it varies. And some do not use page numbers at all just location which is really annoying!

Just checked Amazon UK for Golem... and it says that the kindle version pages mimic that of print book ISBN 0062253824 which is the Large Print edition which would make sense why it is much longer!

message 307: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) It's funny Peggy but because I post number of pages in other groups for challenges, I am acutely aware of how many pages there are from e readers as compared to books. Most times they are the same but I guess in some cases there are vast differences. What drives me nuts is when they use a percentage. I like real numbers maybe because I was an Accounting teacher.

message 308: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I find that most often pages from books as compared to Kindle reads are the same. I don't know how they do that since some read with a larger font and some a smaller font. There may be some discrepancies but I have never seen one as great as this one.

What drives me crazy is when they use percentages. I like real numbers maybe because I was an Accounting teacher.

message 309: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I thought it might be different for kindle because I noticed with some books there that it says 'actual page numbers' and I never saw that with Kobo, and then with that book having so many pages I thought that could be an explanation.

It's confusing, that's for sure ;-)

message 310: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sorry can't edit on my phone but I just read Sarah's message on the large print edition and that does makes sense!

Although it's a bit confusing in terms of this challenge as it still takes the same time to read as a normal print version, it's not like it has extra chapters.

message 311: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments I've seen other challenges where the page number used is the most popular (first book listed) on GR. That way, it's standardized and no one has to wonder.

I didn't realize there could be that much variation with ebooks. I'm a numbers person too, Nancy, so I can understand what you're saying lol.

message 312: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just been trying to link two books as I have just bought a new one and was wondering whether the connection could be that I think the author of both books are hot?!?! I have found a more intellectual link but wanted to check anyway ;-)

message 313: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That raises only one question: who are the authors?!

message 314: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Haha, yeah. Markus Zusak?

message 315: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Peggy wrote: "That raises only one question: who are the authors?!"

Now I realise I may have strange taste in men, but China Miéville and Joe Abercrombie. I have linked them, as I say, in an intellectual way too as both being authors who contributed to the BBC "World of Fantasy" TV series.

@Laura. Off to check out what Markus Zusak looks like now!

message 316: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I thought you could tell a lot about a person by the books they read but which author is " hot" could tell a lot too!
The threads today have been quite entertaining :)

I wonder what that says about me then?!? Now I'm worried!

Perhaps the entertainment level of the threads today is directly proportionate to the amount of alcohol that has been consumed today (or remaining in the blood from yesterday) ;-)

message 318: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Hehe. Markus may be too pretty for you Sarah lol. And you have to hear him talk to really get the whole thing. :))

message 319: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I find Markus a bit too pretty too. But if he has a sexy Australian accent, that might change things!

Joe looks pretty good :)

message 320: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Wouldn't that be a fun challenge? Read a book by an author you think is " hot." Bonus points if he/she has a sexy accent....I need to gopher my TBR .
The author I'm reading now Patrick Rothfuss would NOT be my choice. :) but I would love to chat him up about his next book!

message 321: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes Markus is a bit too pretty but I definitely get the voice crush thing! I like the voice of Andrew Lincoln who is an Actor - I would love it if he narrated audiobooks - off to see if he does now!

Love the challenge idea Marnie!

message 322: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments I like that challenge idea too. :)))

Love the challenge idea too.

I was just saying yesterday that Rothfuss would be a good one to have around a camp fire.

And i see i am not the only one that have a weakness for voices.

Goodreads has two different Kindle editions so you will need to check which publisher did the edition you have.

I know that other groups have gone by the first book that comes up to determine page numbers. But we aren't just any group. Hehehehe! I decided to go with the hardcover edition to change things up a bit. If there is more than one hardcover edition, go with the one that is most advantageous.

Most importantly, don't overthink things. Sometimes the edition you will read (or the alternative) will have page numbers to your advantage. Other times they won't.

That link works for me.

message 326: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Maybe I should say that that link works for me if you add Jo Nesbø to the mix. Or Neil Gaiman.

I absolutely love this connection. And I would say go for it but then again I'm not the leader of this band. LOL

message 329: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments OMG I always thought Jo Nesbo was a woman!

message 332: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments We can only hope, Janice! :D

message 334: by Annie (new)

Annie | 2 comments This is SO cool! You have given me my new year's resolution!! I've got a lot of research to do and hope to have a rough draft of my list before January 1.

message 336: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Oh no! Now I have to go through my chunksters to see which ones are by hunksters :)

message 337: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I like the hunskter idea. I have to see which authors would hit the mark for me. As far as audio readers go, I listened to Will Patton read Thirteen Moons and I fell in love with his voice, not so much his looks though. :(

message 338: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 3367 comments Haha :)

message 339: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I tried using listopia to see if there are any lists with books over 500 pages but nothing came up. I do have more than enough in my closets which I've had for forever - most of them are historical fiction and real doorstoppers but I'm wondering if there are some newer titles I'm missing which would connect real easily.

message 340: by Removed (new)

I'd be happy to make a link with audiobooks narrated by my voice crushes. Hehehehe!

Thanks for the links Janice. I have a preliminary list which I will post over this weekend. But as time goes on and since I am a mood reader I am sure I will change some of the titles.

Janice, I have noticed on Amazon when you look at the details for a Kindle book (close to the bottom of the screen) there is *usually* a reference to the ISBN of the paper & ink edition that the Kindle version is taken from. You could then check the appropriate edition on Amazon and find out the number of pages there are. Did that make sense? :)

message 349: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59911 comments Lynn G. wrote: "You could then check the appropriate edition on Amazon and find out the number of pages there are. Did that make sense? :)"

I understand what you are saying. I guess if people want to research in that detail, they can. Goodreads does list Kindle page lengths on many book pages. If it doesn't, I'm satisfied with people accessing the hardcover editions for edification.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Is this okay for explaining my links? My full plan for Slick's Slugs can be found here.

We start with a French classic, Within a Budding Grove, then cross the border to read a Spanish classic, Don Quixote. That one has lots of adventure, so we next choose A Dance with Dragons, another adventure, but this time a science fiction fantasy. Staying with the fantasy and science fiction genres for the rest of this segment, we'll read Crossroads of Twilight, 1Q84, and The Mists of Avalon.
