I am a big fan of the First World War and enjoyed this book very much. At the end I only wished Montgomery had included the Spanish influenza and Halifax Explosion in the story.
After thinking a while I decided to check the reported death toll the pandemic had on P.E.I. and saw that it was only 101. I guess I can understand that it wasn't such a big deal for the Island so Montgomery probably didn't feel the need to include it.
On the other hand, I think the Explosion should have been in there. True it was in Nova Scotia and not the Island but the provinces are neighbors and it's where Anne came from. Montgomery does such a great job of teaching Canadian history through the stories so I thought this was a missed opportunity.
Would have been interesting if she'd entioned teh Explosion, but her books are so microcosmic that I think, because it didn't affect the main cast of characters, it was left out.
I only wish she showed Walter's poem. We never did get to actually read it and I dare say she didn't get around to writing it either. Ah, well. Later on in another book Ms. Lucy did write a poem which she claimed to be Walter's Piper poem. I guess she forgot, though about the keeping faith thing and the details because they aren't in the latter poem.
