Félix (habitseven) Spelling is my biggest weakness. I'd be lost without spell-checkers.

Spelling rules are an archaic Scottish invention anyway.

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I wish I could not be so anxious about it all.

message 5: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I'm a decent speller but I have to see the word in print to tell if I spelled correctly. And I'm a big reviser. Revising rules.

message 6: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell The Scots invented spelling rules? I dinna know that.

message 7: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Chambers | 12 comments Just to change the subject somewhat, but the rule "give the right away", where did it originate from and why should the car on the right always have the right away??

message 8: by Félix (last edited Jun 22, 2009 09:58AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) I think it's "right of way," indicating who has the right of way, or the right to go through. And you can't be serious about about why the car on right (at a multi-way intersection) gets to go first. You're just pulling our leg, right?

message 9: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Chambers | 12 comments I stand corrected.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Maybe it's the car on the left in the UK?

message 11: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Aw, that's too easy, Sherri.

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I think I should always have the right of way.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Well, okay, Larry, let's see... Might makes right, and the pen is mightier than the sword... so just carry a pen around and you're golden!

message 14: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I ALWAYS have a pen with me. Except, of course, when I don't.

message 15: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) I remember my Oma approaching me with her English book and shaking it at me for our strange rules. It made it VERY difficult for her to learn how to speak English. (btw my Oma is German)

She said it was so confusing when there's silent letters and with the 'i before e' doesn't always happen. Poor Oma :(

message 16: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments It's because Americanized English is such a cobbled-together language from our "melting pot" society. We ran into the same issues with our daughter this year, trying to explain why rules were followed in some instances and not in others.

I can't imagine being from another country and, as an adult, trying to learn this weird language of ours.

Sarah | 13814 comments Without standardized spelling, how could we play Scrabble? There would be chaos. Anarchy.
