Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments This is something I have wanted to increase. Most of the non-fiction books I read this year were excellent, so I don't know why I avoid them. I will try for the Diamond level.

I'm not a big fan of non-fiction so I will commit myself to one (at least in this genre).

I also had a very good non-fiction read year. It turns out that it was mostly at the beginning of the year - so I wonder if that means I prefer reading NF in cold weather.

Kanita Carington-McDonald (kanitacaringtonmcdonald) | 142 comments I don't know why, but non-fiction seems to take me a bit longer to get through. I like non-fiction reads and I, too, desire to read MUCH more non-fiction than I actually do so this challenge is (yet another) excellent one to join! I am challenging myself to read 9+. Count me in at the Diamond Level!! :)

Yes, NF takes me longer also.
To help me along with NF reads, I try to read a chapter a day (or at least some reasonable break point) so I can stay engage and on target with NF books. This allows me to read fiction books which is always drawing my attention away from NF.
I actually also do this with short stories collections (a story a day) and have found that I am able to enjoy each story for itself.

I find myself dragging with nonfiction as well. Even when I'm really into it I think it's the conversational style that it's written in is what makes it drag for me.

Good strategy!

Lol yes I cheated Londa!

message 13: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnavance1) | 11 comments Since I am doing research, I think this should be a pretty attainable challenge. I am going to commit to the sapphire level. Next year is going to be a busy one for me, and I have to leave room for non-fiction escapism.
Please add me to the list of participants. I am also accepting the "New to You" challenge. I will post my level on that page. Can't wait!!!

Andrew | 268 comments Happy New Year to all. I hope I'm not too late to join this challenge. I would like to attempt the Diamond (9+) level.

message 16: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 268 comments One question. For this challenge must the author be of African decent or can we include books by any author as long as they follow the non-fiction themes?

message 17: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Happy New Year! Andrew

Glad you are joining. Any author qualifies as long as the theme is followed.

I'm gonna change mine to Emerald. Oh I'm not a big fan of NF! But a couple of my favs of 2013 were NF so what the hell emerald it is!
1. Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States from Interviews with Former Slaves
2. The Game of Life and How to Play It
3.

Beverly, thanks for the suggestion! I'm usually ambitious to start and the...I get sucked back into my fiction reads and well, you know the rest of the story! But, I will do this. Reading a section or chapter per day is reasonable AND achievable. Looking forward to getting to MORE of my NF interests and exceeding this challeng's goal! :)

Happy New Year and Happy Reading!!

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments How is everyone doing?

I don't think I will get any non-fiction in this month. I KNOW I will get at least one next month with the group read I Put a Spell on You: The Autobiography of Nina Simone.

I think Andrew is blowing us out of the water on this one! :0)

I'm joining a bit late, but I'm excited about this! I've been wanting to read more African and African-American nonfiction for a while. I'm going to aim for the sapphire (6 books). This will be a slow month, but I'll have loads of time during the summer.
