MissSusie | 2421 comments Hi everyone,

I am curious if anyone would be interested in an off the shelf/off the ipod type of challenge for 2014.

Would it be okay with the moderators to start a discussion section for everyone's individual threads?

This challenge would be to help people finally listen to all those books languishing on your ipod or in your audible library that you bought in sales and then new shinier books came along and pushed them down to the bottom. I know when I made a shelf on here with my bought but un-read books there were some I had honestly forgotten I had bought.

I am going to try my best to listen to books I have already bought, but I thought a challenge may help me truly accomplish this!

message 2: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2212 comments I'd be game. I have about 50 books in my possession right now, so this would keep me committed to listening to them before (most of) the shiny new ones.

Exactly I am not saying I will read those exclusively but that I will make a more concerted effort to read them, there is no way I won't still listen to the shiny new ones!

Ha ha ha! Great minds think alike or: an idea whose time has come! :) This is one of my categories for my 2014 challenge:

Jeanie | 4024 comments Count me in. Of course, given the size of my TBR pile, I'll have to commit to a certain number rather than trying to clear the shelf. And--love the term "shiny new books"--I'll be mixing in new and higher-interest ones too.

message 8: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 2212 comments I agree with starting after the new year. I reserve the right to accumulate a few more books on my shelf before the end of the year. :)

message 9: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 392 comments I have one for my paper books, but that works for me, as I tend to read those as I find audio versions for them. I'd set my goal pretty low, though, as I'm barely going to make my goal this year. But maybe I'll finally tackle some of them!

message 10: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 2421 comments Great! I will see what our dear moderators John & Grumpus say about setting up a section for challenges. And yes it would be starting after the 1st of the year.

message 11: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3917 comments Hi folks,

This wouldn't start until January 1st, so we can continue discussing things here for a bit until then. We'd like to keep things down to one "2014 Challenges" folder, with individual challenge threads, rather than a folder for each challenge, with a separate thread for each member's individual progress. In other words, folks would chime in on a thread with where they are every so often as "updates" - make sense?

message 14: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 1184 comments Would we all do the same challenge, or would we have individual objectives?

I'll have to think how I would approach an audiobook challenge. I tend to read my audiobooks in the order in which I acquire them, so I don't have any long forgotten books. It's an entirely different situation with my print books.

message 15: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 4024 comments Just to see what kind of backlog I have, I went through my Audible Library in reverse order and jotted down the unread books. I had to stop in April 2011 because I already had 77 books... Yikes! Of course, I have a total of 1617 books in My Library and I've read over 250 so far this year, but a commitment to begin removing those older unread books would be a good motivator.
I'll be starting with Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White, which is the oldest unread book in My Library, and going on from there--interspersing newer ones, of course.

message 16: by ✨Susan✨ (new)

✨Susan✨ (suswelch) | 223 comments It may be that we each have quite a few of the same books because of the daily deals and the $4.99 sale.

message 17: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 392 comments I'm sure this could involve buddy reads: I.e. if I have a book I want to get if the shelf, I see if anyone else also wants to reward it with me and get it off their shelf as well.

Then, once we had our bucket lists, we read one book a month from the list for the next year. It worked out well. It wasn't too daunting but motivated us to read those books we have always been trying to get to.

I really like your concept, John. I notice that the challenge that Leslie linked has the same sort of structure. It should work well to keep the main monthly and quarterly threads open for other discussions.

Grumpus | 473 comments I can't say I've ever had this problem during my nearly 8 years as an Audible member - - - until now. Like everyone else, I have been taking advantage of the recent spate of great sales. My backlog, albeit smaller than most folks, makes me uncomfortable and fearful that I may have picked up the Audiobook group contagion known as ACD (Audible Compulsive Disorder).

Based upon the polls here, nearly 75% of our members have purchased something from Audible in the past 12 months, each spending approximately $207 on audiobooks per year.

I think this remedy offered by Dr. MissSusie may be our best hope for a backlog cure!

Jeanie | 4024 comments Tim wrote: "Why keep buying books that you don't plan on listening to? I usually buy my books as needed and listen to them right away. I'm on my 94th title for the year."

I plan to read every title in my Library, but the new books that are released from series I follow leapfrog over older classic titles--they can wait a little longer--and then Audible offers books on sale at such good prices that I know I want to read and prefer to take advantage of the lowest price, and, before you know it, there's a backlog.
This year I've read over 250 books that I hadn't read before and re-read another 100, but I bought nearly 400. That's how I get behind, buying more than I can read. But I know I will get to them all eventually, especially now that I've retired and have even more time to read. This challenge gives me the incentive to go back to those books that kept getting superceded so they won't feel like orphans any more.
When I write the actual numbers it almost makes even me gasp. But it's all audio's fault--I never read this much before Audible.

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) | 493 comments I always wanted my own library and now I have it in spades!

13,000 (1,300 audible)books allows me to share with family and pick a book for challenges without buying a new book.

Kindle books and audible add on has made it very reasonable.

My personal success is this library that allows me to travel, get to know people through biographies, learn about history and travel the fantasy routes.

My mood can change daily and the books are there for me.

I am on book 143 and should reach my 150 goal. This wouldn't have happened if I had to go to the library and wait for the book to be available or if I had to pay "retail pricing" for each book.

I often listen to the whole series before I listen to the new release. If I find a new to me series first book on sale I will buy it to see if I like it. Then if I like it I will start trying to catch up with the series. One of my 2014 goals is to listen to the unread series books in my collection. Which is why I really like the 2014 Off The Shelf Challenge idea.I am already making a list and checking it twice. LOL

I pick up freebies whenever I see them (like the SYNC offerings this summer) - so I acquired more than I could listen to at the time. I do plan to listen to them even if I didn't do so immediately.
