Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments Quick test: would you rather read the blurb from my most recent book, or an Amber Alert for a missing cave-troll child? If you're like most people, the cave-troll article was more tempting, and some of you probably even clicked on it. Way more than the number who clicked on the blurb link, anyway.

And that's what's wrong with a lot of online book promotion. We get so focused on pushing our blurbs or our sample chapters, that we stop looking outside the box for more engaging ways to reach people.

Social media is all about the quick, digestible text-bite, and at first, that makes it sound like a great place to throw blurbs around, but have you read your blurb lately? It might describe your book well, but as an experience on its own, most of them are pretty bland.

And that's where The Looking Glass comes in. By publishing "breaking news from the worlds you'd rather live in," the Glass gives readers a much more enjoyable way to experience potential new book worlds. And when was the last time that a review of your book went viral? People actually share and circulate Looking Glass articles - especially the fun ones.

So if you're looking for a fun way to engage with readers, why not give them a sidebar taste of your writing, by sharing some event from your book as though it was being reported in the local news? I'm constantly surprised by how much fun these articles are to write, and our growing readership seems to like this quirky way to explore new book worlds.

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 262 comments This actually looks like tons of fun. Marketing-side set apart, I mean. Thanks for sharing.

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments It really is, Yzabel. I'm glad you see it, too. And surprisingly, it's not just fun for authors. Readers enjoy posting these articles too. It's a great way for them to help promote books they like, and to scratch their fan-fic itch, all at the same time. Even I'm doing it. I write more articles about other peoples books now than I do about my own. :-)

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 262 comments I'll definitely try it at some point. I'm still far from being able to market my own book (I don't think doing heavy marketing when I'm not even done with the first round of edits is such a brilliant idea), but as you said, there are always other people's books! *grins*

message 5: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments Yup. Plus it gives you plenty of practice at writing them so that your article about your own book gets huge followers when you launch. :-) Good luck with the edits.

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Marie Gabriel (lisamariegabriel) | 207 comments Wish I had seen this before I launched....

message 7: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments You mean you no longer try to interest people in your books, Lisa? It works just as well 2 years after launch as it does on launch day.

Spring Horton (springhorton) | 21 comments This looks like a brilliant way to market books. I have a tendency to write like things are real anyway; giving my characters their own blogs and doing first person bios, so I would love to give this a try.

message 9: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Bunker | 7 comments I love the idea! I'm joining right now! Thank for sharing! :D

message 10: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments Glad you all like it. See you over on the Looking Glass.

message 11: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments 8''4, 742lbs? Thats one big child! Lol. I don't think an baby elephant is that big.

message 12: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments Well, don't forget. Cave-trolls eat rocks, so they're going to be heavier than most meat-children.

message 13: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Haha, of course. I checked out the site and its very interesting. I'm going to start working on a few articles for my books. It's got my creative side of my brain working!

message 14: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments That's what I like to hear, Justin. I look forward to seeing your submissions.

message 15: by Cian (new)

Cian Beirdd | 18 comments I just wanted to thank you for the idea. It seems so obvious now but I had never considered it. Brilliant!

message 16: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) | 18 comments Glad you like it, Cian. Maybe we'll see you over on the Looking Glass.

message 17: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Hey Jefferson,
Do we have to insert our books with links on the bottom of the article or do you do that? I wasn't sure so thought I'd ask.

message 18: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Nevermind, I see it. My page wouldn't scroll down so I didn't see it at first.

message 19: by Cindy Lynn (new)
