Feliks (dzerzhinsky) A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman

The Solace of Open Spaces...another female author. Gertrud something.

There's also a series called 'Adirondack Woman' about a female living the life of Walden in upstate New York.

Medicine Woman Lynn V. Andrews has a series of half-a-dozen books about a female shaman.

Snow a fun thriller about a female insurgent in SE Asia.

D.M. Dutcher | 339 comments The Age of Missing Information is about the difference between the information nature gives you and what television and media does. A nice argument why you should connect with nature more.

message 9: by Michele (new)

Michele | 279 comments A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter is an old book, Kindle has a free version, about a girl who lives at the edge of a forest swamp and there's a lot about her exploring it and studying the wildlife and plants. She also collects a lot of things she finds and sells them to a naturalist to pay for her schooling. It's an excellent book, though the second half becomes a bit focused on romance, mostly it's about Elnora coming of age, her relationship with her mother, and the Limberlost. Reminds me a bit of Anne of Green Gables.

Cynthisa | 4 comments Maybe too YA, but I'd add "Island of the Blue Dolphin." Though it's more survival and coming-of-age than communing-with-nature oriented, it's still a great one. The young female protagonist ultimately finds that her island home supplies everything she needs -- if she but knows how to find it and use it wisely....

Cynthisa | 4 comments Oh, and you can't beat Jon Krakauer's Into The Wild, which is literally about the collision of modern man and nature (told ostensably through the tale of a young man's death in the wids of Alaska).

Agree with My Side of the Mountain. It is young adult, but well worth the read. I did not quite enjoy the sequels as much.

If you are into mysteries at all, the Anna Pigeon series by Nevada Barr is about a woman ranger who works in various different National Parks and is always getting in touch with nature. Lots and lots of passages about wilderness, animals, her interactions with the environment.

Jill | 69 comments I really enjoyed Pocketful of Pinecones: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9...

It's just a sweet book about a mother and her young children exploring nature and learning lessons from it. A story of a much simpler time without all the distractions of TV, cell phones, etc.
