Laura | 49 comments Has anyone read this book? If not I would suggest it for one of the books read by the group. It is a wonderful book told by three women in the South, two who are "the help". I cried and I laughed.....and it made believe in the human spirit. Love to hear from others who have read it.

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I loved it too. I swear I could picture each woman in my head like they were right beside me telling their story. Wonderful

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura | 49 comments I agree it was like they were telling me their stories....I laughed so hard at the scene where Minny was chasing the man outside Celia's house!

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Minny was a hoot. I want a piece of her caramel cake.

Tera | 2564 comments Mod

Holli I really want to read this one too!

message 7: by Mandee (last edited Jun 25, 2009 04:39PM) (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 69 comments I REALLY want to read this one too.. I just want to thank whoever nominated it (I'm too lazy to go look :) ) I would love for it to win a group read.. I keep voting for it, but :( ... Maybe we can persuade more Chicks to look into it now :)!

message 8: by Monica (new)

Monica (imelda85) I can't wait to read this! It sounds wonderful!

message 9: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 91 comments I loved this book and highly recommend it. To those who have read it, can you see it as a movie? I kept picturing Whoopi Goldberg as one of the "help." I can't remember the character's name--the one with the abusive husband.

message 10: by Nadia (new)

Nadia A (bagambo) This books sounds great!

message 11: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) Okay, added it to my TBR shelf. I'm looking forward to this one!

message 12: by KrisT (new)

KrisT | 553 comments I loved this book. I Listened to it and it was done so well. I did nominate for one of our group reads but it did not win so I didn't wan to push it but if you have not read it you should..haha!

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 192 comments I saw this book at Target today, and almostttttt got it. DH gave me the evil eye though, so I will wait until next time, when he's not with me. LOL

message 14: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) My mom took a ride to B&N today and beforehand I put this book fresh on her mind. We will see.

message 15: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) My mom picked it up for me! I will be reading this next week. Woo Hoo!!

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 192 comments Your mom is awesome, Mandy Sue! Please post to let us know how the book is!

message 17: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments This is one of my top books for this year. I have read it as both a hand held and an audio. The audio was wonderful with different actors taking on each womans voice.

I can't say enough about how wonderful it is. It is told in many voices. Each voice is unique and well drawn. You feel you are friends with the woman by the time the book is over. Its just a wonderful story about a time in history where people were not always treated as they should be. It shows you how The Help dealt with this mistreatment and most times came off as beeing more nobel then Icould have been

message 18: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mettakaruna) I'm so excited!

Christy ~ My mom is the best. I truly am blessed!

message 19: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 69 comments For anyone that wants to know: The Help is in second place in the group read poll!

Vote if you haven't done it yet..... voting ends in 2 days :} ! I'm excited!

(Thank You! to whoever nominated it again :D )

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) It's also currently 40% off in store at Barnes and Noble for B&N Members!

message 21: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Hey, Jo, I'm not a B&N member. But I was wondering if you could use you super B&N Member powers, buy me a copy, mail it, and I'll cut you a check for the book price and the shipping?

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Sure Lori, next time I'm over there, if it's still 40% off, I'll pick it up for you! Can't guarantee when though, we're going to be pretty busy here thru the weekend so the earliest I'd get a chance is next week.

message 23: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jo, If it works out, great; if not, oh well, at least we tried. Thanks buddy!

message 25: by Beth (new)

Beth Larabee | 52 comments Love this book!!!

message 26: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments LOL this is currently the book for book clubs. You know how a couple years ago everyone read the red tent for their book club? Well this is the new one. It is a wonderful book very discussable and a pleasure to read. I have not voted for it because I have already read it and discussed it in 3 book clubs.

Oh another of the book club favorites was Water for elephants. Their is a reason these books are so popular

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Teri, I think it won. I'm so excited about it! I got a hardback copy from Amazon for 45% off.

message 28: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Brenda, Yes for September.

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 192 comments I just picked this book up at the library today! Didn't actually want to start it until next month, but I've been on the hold list at a different library for a while now. When I saw it today at the new library, I figured I should get it while I could. Lol!

message 30: by Kelso (new)

Kelso Ansara (kelsolikesbooks) | 3 comments I put off reading this book for a while then picked it up and couldn't put it down...

I loved Abieleen...!!!!!!

message 31: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Teri, At least now you won't have to try to work it in before we discuss it.

message 32: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I haven't started this yet, but I've been wanting to read it for some time. I just picked it up on audio from the library. What a corny cover. I know the book has a yellow-y cover, but the CD case has 2 fists, 1 white and 1 black (both obviously male) instersecting across the front. Good thing I already knew I wanted to "read" this book, or I might not have gotten it out.

message 33: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie | 1 comments I agree with Teri - this is an excellent book. The characters are fabulous - very human - even the "bad" ones. I laughed, I cried... :)

message 34: by Ann (new)

Ann Steiner | 1 comments This is a must read book. I felt like I knew the characters and would recognize them if I saw them walking down the street. Even though the maids spend a lot of time cleaning I have to say my house went to pot until I finished the book.

message 35: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments I adore this novel through and through. I'm very glad it was mentioned on CoL b/c I'd never would have seen it on the bookshelf to pick up! ^.^

message 36: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Does anyone know if this is going to be the book for the beginning or end of Sept.?

message 37: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 654 comments *nods at teri!*

I felt I could easily know what the characters would say next! The pie story left me in stitches. Horrified stitches and laughter :)

message 38: by Rose (new)

Rose (roseo) Ok, you all twisted my arm, LOL, I just started it last night. :D

message 39: by Peanut (new)

Peanut | 149 comments I guess I'm in the minority. I just finished it and I'm all meh on it. I didn't like Skeeter at all. Minny and Hilly and Celia were great characters. Overall the story was interesting but the ending was so blah. To me there really wasn't an ending to the book.

This may have suffered though because I started this after reading The Book Thief and I have to say that was one of the BEST books I read in awhile. I may still have been thinking about that story while trying to read this.

I still think I wouldn't have liked Skeeter either way though. Oh well.

message 40: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 12 comments I can usually get wrapped up in just about any story, I'm about 160 pages in and I'm still slowly pulling myself through the story. I keep hoping it picks up!!

message 41: by Rose (last edited Aug 17, 2009 08:33AM) (new)

Rose (roseo) I just finished The Help and I liked it.

I recommend reading (before you read the book) the author's "in her own words"- "Too Little, Too Late" at the back of the book, after the acknowledgements. It gave me a better feel for the book. The author was raised by a black woman named Demetrie, who she loved.
I understood the whole story much better.

message 42: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I'm almost finished (3 discs left!), and I feel like this book has been much more character driven than plot driven, which tends to be a downer for me. I probably won't be gushing about this book, but it's been enjoyable. I really like Skeeter. There are definite moments of humor and amusement. I loved the toilet scene! I wish I could see pictures of it.

message 43: by Valerie (new)

Valerie I'm glad that The Help is set to be a group read in September. I just finished it a couple weeks ago and really loved it. It started off a little slow for me but after about 100 pages or so I really fell in love.

message 44: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments Oh Brenda you are one of my favorites to read comments from. Yet you and I are totally opposit. What I love you hate. What you love I hate. But the thing is what you say always makes me think about the book. Glad you are in this group

message 45: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 69 comments My library finally got a copy, but someone already checked it out so estimated wait time is 18 days.... won't be enough time to read it before the discussion, so I'll just have to come in late :). Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll finish it early! I'm just happy they got it, and I don't have to spend money I don't have to go buy it ;).

message 46: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (kathrynh) I adored this book and I learned so much. Being from Washington State and in my 50s, I had no idea what it was like in th 60s and how the blacks were still treated. Some of the characters in this book you want to jump in and shake them until their teeth rattled. It's a great read and I am always recommending it.

message 47: by Elena (new)

Elena I am reading the book and I think it is a beautiful story. My favorite parts are the ones with Minny and Celia. I am half way into it and it is getting a little slow, kind of going over the same point over and over again. Still, I can't put it down.

message 48: by Elena (last edited Aug 23, 2009 02:06PM) (new)

Elena I found myself usually in the minority on book discussions. But with this one I am with the majority. I loved the book. I got really involved with the plot to the point where I cried, laughed, cheered out loud. I will talk about it more when we discuss the book next month.

message 49: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Frantz (nicoleraephotos) | 12 comments I bought this book on Amazon, got it last Friday... I'm more than half-way finished. I haven't read this much in a long time so this is a keeper. Every character is so real to me. I can't wait to discuss it in September. I hope The Forgotten Garden is just as good!

message 50: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (wildhoney) Just started this audiobook today! 18 hours so I shall be enjoying it on my commutes over the next few weeks.
