A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Hi, I am after some info. I currently am part of Smashwords Affiliates but so far it has generated nada in payment. Is the Amazon associates programme more successful and what does it involve. Can you be in both SW and Amazon one?

D.M. (dmyates) I don't know about being in both, but I was an Amazon Associate for over a year and the same thing as you - nada. However, I received a small payment for sales of my book. I thought it was just from sales. I dropped out of the program. My sales payments have been 1/10th of what that first payment was so I rejoined to see if anything changes.
I didn't even know Smashwords had an associates program. Can't wait for some other answers on this discussion.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments Smashwords has one, you can take a slightly lower royalty and the associate who makes the sale gets the difference. I think if you join it defaults to 10% or similar. I have made nothing from that, but then most of the people I know sell mostly through Zon.

I guess if it is exclusive I could leave the smashwords on, as I am not making anything anyway.

Weenie When you create an Amazon associates account, you are given lots of 'tools' to help you generate income, eg links, banners etc. When people click on your links/banners and make a purchase, you will get commission. I would assume that authors would put such links/banners on their websites/blogs etc?

Send this link to your friends and family, ask them to save it as a Favourite link so that every time they purchase via Amazon, they will go via that link and you will get some commission.

I run such an associates account for a society I'm a member of and it generates around £40 a month on average - people buy all sorts via the link and it was good over Christmas!

Paul (paullev) | 196 comments The key to making money as an Amazon associate is having a well-read blog with links to Amazon books and products in addition to those for your books. I've been an Amazon Associate in the US for years, and make enough every month or two to take my wife out to dinner.

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Weenie, I believe providing a custom-built link for friends and family is against Amazon's TOCs and you could get thrown off the scheme.

Everyone else, I make money from the associates scheme, but very little.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Yes, the amazon associates programme excludes friends and family and they decide if someone is. However it is a handy little thing and pays for our get togethers so I would ask anyone using this group not to use their associate link here.

Also, if you use our link that would be appreciated... :-)

I Know you do. I was just having a brazen plug for adding &tag=ethings-21 to amazon links...

Oops. Did it again :-)
