Lauren Smith Happy New Year everyone! Here's a little reading challenge to kick off 2014. It'll last from 1 January to 31 March and any books you finish in that time can be used, as long they are at least 150 pages long.

Here are the tasks:
1. Start a new series.
2. Read a book by an author you've never read before.
3. Read a book in which the main character tries to make a new start and improve their life (whether or not it works :)
4. From the holiday season back to the real world. Read a book where a major character overindulges (in food, alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.) and then has to deal with the consequences.
Note: this should be a significant feature in the plot, not just a few drinks followed by a hangover or something.
5. New Year's Resolutions: they never last. Read a book in which the main character breaks an oath or promise.
Again, something significant.
6. But hey, it's a new year and it's good to be optimistic. Make a New Year's Resolution, tell us what it is, and read a book related to it.
7. What event are you looking forward to this year? Let us know and read a book that's related to it.
It can be a wedding, a concert, the publication of a book you're looking forward to, etc.

Happy reading!

Lauren Smith This one ends tomorrow guys! Anyone else going to try and finish it?

message 11: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Sorry, I never make new years resolutions and then I could lie and say I made one but that wouldn't be fair. So this challenge was impossible for me to finish. But it had some interesting tasks that we may want to recycle in another challenge. :)

message 12: by Liezel (new)

Liezel (liezkl) | 736 comments Looks like I'll have to settle for 6/7 :(

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol, Barbara, you'd could have just thought of something without bothering to stick to it! No one sticks to them anyway.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Well I am a stickler for the rules, so I didn't think it fair because then I could think of something easy that fit the book I happened to read. Unfair advantages and all that. I am a moderator after all. :)

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well, I meant for the challenge to be easy, since it's the start of the year :) And my Resolution made that task very easy for me.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Yeah, you just had to read a book you got from NetGalley. Very clever.

It was a good and easy challenge. The resolution wasn't the only reason I didn't participate. It was right smack in the middle of all my internet and computer problems, which made it hard for me to update stuff. I still haven't got all my files back and all the programs installed on my laptop, but I am getting there.
