Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Good luck with these ! And. Happy New Year to you. :)

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Interesting looking books there, hope you enjoy them

message 4: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) This is an interesting list Tweedledum, and I look forward to your comments.

I haven't read any of the biographiesin your list, but "know someone who has" as they say! The ones about Paul Dirac and Benjamin Britten are both highly recommended by members of my family. And the two by Claire Tomalin would attract me too. I have two others, and think she is one of our best literary biographers.

message 5: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I found myself saying "ooh, that's a good book" and "yes, I want to read that too!" many times while perusing your list. I especially liked your choices for classics and mysteries/crime/thrillers. :)

message 6: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments I'm trying to put in 14 in each category but want to finish tonight! Quite ambitious, will probably change stuff as the year progresses but hey it's fun!
If I manage to read 10 of the 14 in each this year I shall be well pleased.

message 7: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I hadn't realised it was a work in progress - now there are loads of goodies!!

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Good luck Tweedledum. I got Northanger abbey on my tablet too but haven't read it yet.

message 9: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments I read Northanger Abbey to death in school for O- level and only now feel like reading it again. Really finding it entertaining and clever now, then just thought it was a bit pathetic and Catherine M just plain stupid.

LOL! Yes, it is easy to read the surface and feel this way - it took me a few rereads to see beneath the surface!

Now to decide which to go for in January.....

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Just finished 600 Hours of Edward which I thoroughly recommend. I see I started in last July but put it on the back boiler for a long time. Returning to it I found it was a real page turner the author has done such a great job of helping us see Edward as a whole person, who despite his eccentricities and unusual way of thinking deserves our respect. Got to get my teeth into the sequel now!
Ruth reading.
In sharp contrast The Dinner and Cuckoo are both seriously disturbing novels but definitely worth reading.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Oh now you made me curious! It is on my TBR as well, and I thought to tackle it in summer.

BTW: should we move your thread into the challenge section maybe?

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Finished London Under: The Secret History Beneath the Streets a few days ago. If you are interested in the history of London this is a must. A surprisingly easy read.

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Just finished Dave Gorman vs. the Rest of the World: Whatever the Game — Dave Takes on All Comers! what a terrific book. Here's a man who thinks outside the box and dares to do crazy things. I love it!

message 21: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Inspired by Dave Gorman vs. the Rest of the World: Whatever the Game — Dave Takes on All Comers! I just whizzed through Are You Dave Gorman?. What a crazy but great idea.

Also have been listening to Faulks on Fiction. This did, I confess, make me feel like I had managed to miss an awful lot of what's going on underneath in literature but Faulks is really writing for the general reader and provides much food for thought.

message 22: by Pink (new)

Pink Wow this is quite a list. I want to tackle a few of these classics in 2014 too, as well as Game of Thrones, On the Map and The thirteenth tale, which I already own.

Thank you Lynne for your comments. It's always good to hear from someone who likes the same books as you! I read Richard Fortey's book about the natural history museum a couple of years ago Dry Store Room No. 1: The Secret Life Of The Natural History Museum and absolutely loved it. Have you read it? I started Trilobite in the autumn and put it down so need to get into it again. Thanks for your encouragement.
I haven't heard of Liza Picard. I shall have to look her up.

Leslie | 16369 comments Tweedledum wrote: "Well my list is proving over ambitious as usual! Feb and March ...too busy to read much and got sidetracked into other biblious forays but good to check back today with my January intentions."

You were a little ambitious perhaps but no harm in having a goal as long as you don't feel it turn into a millstone. Plus I generally find making up such lists is a fun activity, so if nothing else you got to enjoy that part!

message 30: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Yes I agree! I do love compiling lists of books.

In fact I quite like making lists of all sorts of things ......
Except work.......
And housework.......
Those are potentially scary lists!

I love Goodreads because here I have discovered there are actually hundreds of folks out there who love compiling lists of books!

Which reminds me.......now where did I put The Book of Lists: The Original Compendium of Curious Information. (Uses search engine to see if book is listed.......... Discovers 10+ pages listing books that are books of lists! which do not include almanacs, field guides, etc etc....)

THINKING

Hmmm
I could make a list of the books of lists I do not own and do not wish to......
No
I won't go there....

But there again maybe there's some fun to be had in compiling a list of books of lists on listopia and seeing how many people join me in my craziness....

message 31: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) We have continuing mild disagreements about lists in this house.

I have always have had detailed and correct lists for my books since I was a tiny child, with my invented "Polar Bear library" system. As I grew older I had lists I would keep up to date of my cassettes, videos, and the updated versions of such. Also essential stuff such as shopping would have temporary lists.

But Chris (my husband) is a great list-maker of "jobs". So if any little thing needs doing in the house, it turns into a 3-hour long discussion session, where all the maintenance/clearing out sort of jobs get listed and prioritised, which results in a mammoth "list" several sheets long and in different categories. Chris feels that this is progress, whereas I feel depressed by it, and wish we'd spent the time doing one of the things on the list!

We're both pretty nerdy in that we organise and alphabeticise etc. So who is right in this case? Or would the magazines say we are incompatible? We have been married for 40 years, so presumably do manage to compromise! LOL

message 32: by Tweedledum (last edited Apr 07, 2014 04:19AM) (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Al these attempts to categorise, systemise and label human relationships will always fail! Like or unlike the complexity of a successful long term relationship will always defy analysis. It all goes to show we are not robots.

About 20 years ago my husband and I did a well respected personality analysis that determined that we were opposites on every category except the introvert extrovert scale and by rights should never have got along. The insight certainly helped explain why certain things we each did drove each other mad but love and forgiveness play a major part don't they in overcoming such frustrations.

message 33: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh dear, I really must stop asking these rhetorical questions!!

Of course you are absolutely right Tweedledum :)

message 34: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments Goodreads the perfect place to air random thoughts and be taken seriously. Personally i find the whole thing very liberating.

message 35: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) And I was interested to read about your "well respected personality analysis" experience...

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2166 comments 11. Poetry
Pride and Prejudice, Retold in Limericks ....Cleverly done
What the Light Was Like
Once, I was the Rain, Poetry & Artwork

I better make this a Poetry and Art category. Then I can add
Bridget Riley: Flashback
And
Laura Knight: Portraits
That makes 5!
