Please discuss chapters 1-9 of The Giver here.

Chinook I taught The Giver to an ESL class about five years ago. Great book. I've read one of the sequels, A Gathering Blue, but not Son.

Sheila Love The Giver and the sequels! The writing style felt almost a little too simple at first but then that didn't matter because the story took over. I loved the thoughts on community while imagining this surreal place.

Randa I read this many years ago and really enjoyed it. Don't believe I read the sequels though. I have it on the shelves downstairs so look forward to reading it again through new older eyes and seeing if I am still moved by this book. My new bath tub read.

Diane S ☔ Read this long ago, This was actually our town's One book read in the Summer a few years back and Lois Lowry came to our library. She was great, but I need to re-read this one so I can discuss.

Kressel Housman | 99 comments I heard an interview with the author once, and she said that The Giver was very much about the mother/son relationship. I haven't seen much of that in the book so far, so I'm wondering if perhaps she was talking about one of her other books.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I think it'll come through later in The Giver (not with Jonas), but it's really more in the last book.

Kressel Housman | 99 comments It's a series? How long is it?

I read it in high school and LOVED it. I didn't know until recently that there were sequels. Kressel, there are four books total, the last of which was just published a year or so ago. I don't know if that's supposed to be the end or if there are additional sequels to follow.

Sheila It's a series in a strange sort of way because the 2nd and 3rd books are about different people and communities. Some people didn't like that the 2nd book didn't pick up where the first one left off, but then the last one ties them all together. They're all great stories and can be read separately. I loved hearing about the different communities while comparing the different ways of life.

Diane S ☔ Am actually listening to this one in what will be only my third audio book. So far, so good.

Jennifer | 285 comments I really enjoyed this book. I would have loved it as a child too.

I'm highly enjoying rereading this one. The ceremony of Twelve is suspenseful and the mystery surrounding it all is so intriguing. In some ways it's your run of the mill young adult, post apocalyptic story, but to my knowledge, it's one of the first, if not THE first, of it's kind, and it's still very good.
