Robert (bakreni) | 2 comments Urban Fantasy or Fantasy book with main character that is in grey area(Sandman Slim), has dark/split personality(Demon Accords, Dresend filer later in the serier) or just evil(Nagash, Malus Darkblade from Warhammer), well Malus is more cruel and cunning than evil but you get the drift.

Marianne Dead Things by Stephen Blackmoore comes to mind.

message 3: by thalassic (new)

thalassic The Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman is good. Cal gets progressively darker as the series goes on and he does have a very dark side that always wants to be let out. I also like that the series has a lot of humor to balance the dark. Nightlife (Cal Leandros, #1) by Rob Thurman

If you like those characters, she's also written Chimera (The Korsak Brothers, #1) by Rob Thurman which has a similar dynamic between the main characters and dark themes. No fantasy creatures though, just genetically manipulated psychic abilities.

Also, not sure if it's UF or not (more like a blend of more traditional fantasy with a dystopian cyberpunk-ish future) but Matthew Stover's Acts of Caine series is really excellent and Caine is about as dark as an antihero can get while still being the hero he doesn't want to be. Heroes Die (The Acts of Caine, #1) by Matthew Stover is the first one.

Already Dead (Joe Pitt, #1) by Charlie Huston might qualify too. Joe Pitt is on the grey side of things, definitely not a nice guy but in the hard-boiled detective kind of way. He's mouthy like Stark and not shy about the violence when it's expedient.

Blood Oranges (Siobhan Quinn, #1) by Kathleen Tierney has a female protagonist who is pretty grey. It's the first in a new series so not sure if I will continue to like her but it was an interesting take on some typical UF themes.

Kathy (Kindle-aholic) (kindleaholic) | 192 comments Blackbirds (Miriam Black, #1) by Chuck Wendig by Chuck Wendig - Miriam is generally just a nasty human being to be around and as the series progresses her use of her "gift" gets darker. Not evil. She is kind of sympathetic. But still horrible.

I second Dead Things, great read.

Bloodlines (Demons of Oblivion, #1) by Skyla Dawn Cameron by Skyla Dawn Cameron - the MC is in a grey area. Not necessarily a bad person, but not altruistic either.

Tasula | 150 comments I second Charlie Huston's Already Dead series- very gritty and good. Also try:
The Last Werewolf the hero is a werewolf, and not a nice one
Hunter's Moon he's an assassin
Blood Engines ruthless magician
Bloodshot heroine is a thief and vamp

I'll second on Chuck Wendig and also Skyla Cameron. Oh, and Unholy Ghosts would fit that bill, too.

Christine | 752 comments I second Cal Leandros by Rob Thurman, Nightside by Simon Green and Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane.

I recently read the first two Vlad Taltos books by Steven Brust which might fit the bill Jhereg (Vlad Taltos, #1) by Steven Brust

And maybe the Hellequin Chronicles by Steve McHugh Crimes Against Magic (Hellequin Chronicles, #1) by Steve McHugh

message 11: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 6 comments The first thing that came to mind is Empress (Godspeaker Trilogy #1) by Karen Miller . Hekat is certainly dark, I found her rather terrifying really.
