But he does have some redeeming qualities. He saved all those people and respects Brienne, and truely loves his sister, he doesn't even cheat her. :D

The bolded is not one of the redeeming qualities ;-). But .... okay, maybe on the first and second. And the fourth is just funny! :D

Another mysterious sentence! ;-) I don't know what the bolded means :D.

Hi and welcome, LunaBelle!

Luna (lunaluss) Sorry? Is there a mistake there?
English is not my native language, I guess I will be makig a lot of mistake. Bear with me ;)

And thanks.

ahhh, I apologize, Luna. I was being silly, b/c Tytti (who's first language is Finnish) just tripped me up with English slang that I did not know ;-). I was teasing myself, mostly.

Make as many mistakes as you like! You should SEE some of the typos (mistakes on keyboard strokes, mostly because of autocorrections) I send forth into the universe ;-).

What I didn't know was, what does HF refer to? :)

Tytti | 1010 comments MK wrote: "What I didn't know was, what does HF refer to? :) "

Historical Fiction.

Oh, and I have the same problem, LunaBelle. Though most of my books are HF or Classics.

message 159: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) Oh I meant historical fiction :D

I should introduce myself, but honestly i'm bad at that lol i never know what to say. If you have any question, let me know!

Ahh, historical fiction! You and Tytti answered at the same time :). No worries, you can say as little or as much as you'd like.

Hmmm, questions? I guess, what is your first language, and how many languages do you speak? Tytti speaks about twenty-five languages, I'm pretty sure ;-). (that was a joke, not that many)

message 162: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) Tytti, it i frustrating, isnt it? I usually end up reading an unexpected book (lik the novel i'm reading atm)

MK my first language is Arabic. I also speak/read French.

message 163: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments MK wrote: "The bolded is not one of the redeeming qualities ;-).D "

Well... maybe not the way he expresses it but as he says: "We don't get to choose who we love." It's sort of sweet, in a twisted way. :-P

It's twisted :p.

I would have guessed Spanish because of that "Luna".

No, I don't know Spanish. I remember one discussion at a bar with friends and there was Rammstein's Te Quiero Puta playing. My male friend understood "Te Quiero" and I knew "Puta". I don't know what that tells about us. And no, I don't know where I've learned that.

message 167: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments He's a romantic, and you have a potty mouth? lol ~

Hmmm, unless Te Quiero was "I WANT" and not "I LOVE".

Hmmmmm .... maybe he's not a romantic. :D

message 168: by Luna (new)

  Luna (lunaluss) Thanks MK!

Lmao, tytti i think that i can guess the meaning of puta as well :p

No, it means "I love". But I didn't say I'd use the word, I just understood it. It wouldn't surprise me if I had learned it from some Pedro Almodóvar movie.

ETA: Actually I think it means "I love you", like French te in Je t'aime.

"I love" can be Te Quiero, or Te Amo. Te Amo is the hot, passionate, romantic, spouse sort of love. I don't speak French, but I think maybe that is the one that corresponds to Je t'aime?

But, querer also means "I want", or "I would like to have", or something like that. It does mean "I love", too, but more like you love your friends and family, although it can mean love your spouse, too.

Anyway, I'm not the best person, I only had high school spanish. Someone who knows the language should probably explain it, instead of me :D.

Also, heheh, just teasing you on the 'potty mouth' comment. I am reading Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened for another club. She's TOTALLY hilarious, that author. BUT, total potty mouth ;-).

Tytti | 1010 comments LunaBelle wrote: "Hi tytti."

Oh, hi there Luna! Btw, I was wondering... I don't know where are you from but I have noticed that many Arabs seem to speak fluent French. Is it a popular language to study or is it just because I have watched French documentaries and the interviewees have studied in France or something? Oh and I know that countries like Algeria used to be under French rule and that's why it's spoken there. (I don't know how popular it is, though...)

I am in the middle of a language debate and was wondering how useful French would be there. Most Finns don't know Arabic after all (most don't know French, either, which is sort of my point).

message 182: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) I live in Morocco which was also colonized by the French. Since we got out independence, French has become a second language. We learn it at school since the age of 8. French is really popular here, and in most countries which were under the French colonization. You wouldnt have a problem to communicate with people in French in those countries, esp in cities.

message 183: by Tytti (last edited Apr 12, 2014 08:21AM) (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments Oh, thanks. That's how I've understood it, actually. (Though your independence started more peacefully than in Algeria, for example.) It's good thing, since Arabic is a bit difficult for us Europeans...

I have always liked French, it's a shame I wasn't able to to start studying it before I was already 16, so I don't really know it. (And it's one of the reasons why I am in the middle of the language debate. We have to start studying Swedish as a second foreign language but the difference is that we don't actually need, use or hear it anywhere...)

message 184: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) What a shame. You should rather learn a language you'd need for your own reasons.

Personally, I wish i could speak German. Mostly because of their philosophy lol.

message 185: by Tytti (new)

Tytti | 1010 comments LunaBelle wrote: "Personally, I wish i could speak German. Mostly because of their philosophy lol."

German is actually my third best language. But because I started it a year later than Swedish and they are very similar, I can't really use it because they get mixed, though I can understand some German. (One of the arguments for mandatory Swedish is that it's easier to learn other languages after that. That tells you all about the level of the discussion. And this is something that politicians keep telling us. The whole thing would be so laughable if it weren't so bad for the Finnish society because most Finns know only English. Hardly anyone can speak French, or German, or Russian, or any other major language.)

Though I could have started French in German's place but it was probable that there wouldn't be a continuing class in the upper secondary school I would go afterwards (not enough students taking that) so I chose German that gets that class.

message 186: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) Teach me German, and I teach you French :p

Daisy (bellisperennis) Gene wrote: "Does anyone have an interest in literary non-fiction."

There is some super classic non-fiction. It's a great idea to read some Plato or Herodotus. Or, The Complete Essays by Montaigne. Has Walden by Thoreau been nominated?

We read 12 Years a Slave and Other Slave Narratives by Northup.

How about The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Stein. Or The Origin of Species by Darwin (is this literary?).

It's time to get nominating . . .

The captivity narrative can also be interesting.

message 191: by Kim (new)

Kim (whatkimreads) Maybe for classic non-fiction we could read some of Roland Barthes work? I don't know if anyone else would be interested in this. But in my literature classes we talk about him quite a lot, he's had a very large influence on literature.

I'd suggest reading The Death of the Author (his most "famous" work I think).

Again I don't know if this is a good idea for this group, so maybe I'll try to read it by myself sometime!

The Death of the Author

message 192: by Luna (new)

Luna (lunaluss) The Death of The Author is really good. It gives a view into a new standpoint within the modern/postmodern age. I'd also suggest Barthes' S/Z by Roland Barthes
