Wiltshire Hermit | 611 comments After a few years of major life changes I have been trying to get my reading back to pre-2008 levels. The best year I've done since 2003 when I started logging it, (although I'm sure I read tonnes more when I was younger) is 70 books in 2005 and last year was my recent best of 55 books. Therefore I'm challenging myself to read 60 books this year AND ALSO to read more than I acquire and clear out any I absolutely do not need to keep. This is a problem for me, as I'm sure it is for all true bookworms. Last year I acquired 109...and that was me being careful...eep!

Good luck everyone!

Wiltshire Hermit | 611 comments I have also decided to target some authors and/or books specifically this year, as they have been in my library for too long unread:

Foucault's Pendulum
House of Leaves
His Dark Materials Trilogy
The first Flashman book (on husband's request)

And at least one unread book from my collections by:

Margaret Atwood
Paul Auster
Angela Carter
Joanne Harris
Alice Hoffman
John Irving
Barbara Kingsolver
Milan Kundera
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Ian McEwan
Haruki Murakami
Iris Murdoch

Cassandra | 5832 comments One of my goals is to read the books I already own and try not to pick up too many new ones... So far, so good, but it's definitely a struggle. I can't help but pick up cheap books at used book stores and thrift shops!

I don't know how you do that. I keep telling myself to stop buying books but it is just too hard. I have given myself a price that I won't pay over for a book and am doing well at sticking to it. I also have started using my library for e-books and audio books. That has saved me money. It is just so hard to say no!

Wiltshire Hermit | 611 comments yup - i'm hearing you both! i've 'only' bought 10 so far this year and i think that's 'good'? hah!

Hi Adriana! I'm doing ok thus far, however some have been VERY short e-books, so i'm not counting my chickens yet. Also, i tend to slow down in the summer when i spend more time in the garden and painting, so i'm trying to get a head start :)

i am quite pleased to say that i am now 68% (41/60) complete on my 2014 books goal, and 76% (11,373/15,000) on my 2014 pages goal. i set the latter so that i wasn't tempted to read all short books, or kids' books to hit my 60 book target ;)
