message 1: by Paul (new)

Paul Hi guys. Thought it might be useful to have a specific topic where people can ask for or give book recommendations (other than the "what are you reading" threads).

I think a lot of people here like the Dresden Files (hence why Mr Butcher has a thread all to himself) and might be looking for similar books. Thought I would recommend a series that I read last year called "Rivers of London" by Ben Aaronovitch. Essentially about a London police officer who becomes involved in investigating crimes involving magic.

I thought they were really fun reads and have a light-hearted tone that reminded me a lot of Jim Butcher's work. There are currently four books in the series:

1. Midnight Riot
2. Moon Over Soho
3. Whispers Under Ground
4. Broken Homes

And having a whole bunch of #1 series books lined on the inside of that coat.

message 16: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I also like Alex Hughes' series starting with Clean (Mindspace Investigations, #1) by Alex Hughes Clean...

Just sayin'

Laurel Thanks for the thread, Paul!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Meh. I think I'm over UF unless something about the blurb really stands out and grabs me.

message 19: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments UF is my favorite reading slump breaker.

message 20: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Emily, who do you like to read? Who are your "go to" UF authors?

message 21: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments I'm in a mood for some UF.

Maybe Incryptid. There's some prequel short stories on her website.

Paul Laurel wrote: "Emily, who do you like to read? Who are your "go to" UF authors?"

I'd be keen for some more UF recommendations as well (other than the ones that others have mentioned elsewhere in this thread of course :)

If anyone can recommend some good "colonisation of space" books as well that would be great. The Last Colony and The Reality Dysfunction are two of my favourite sci-fi books and I'd love to read some more stuff with that theme. Want to get to On the Steel Breeze as well at some point.

message 23: by Emily (new)

Hahaha I just spotted this post. I assume I'm wearing a hat and dark glasses as well in this scene.

"Come on kid the first chapter's always free."

Emily, I don't call that boring at all. Those guys are popular for a good reason :) I never know half of the obscure authors that some people seem to read.

*dies laughing*

See, we really do need to focus on getting kids hooked on books.

Hooked on Books! I like the title.

message 27: by Chris , cookie guilt (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Better than the Book Hookers?

message 28: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments *snicker*

Well, yeah. For kids.

message 29: by Paul (new)

Paul Love them both. I can definitely see Hooked on Books as a kids tv show with some kind of animal mascot (I'm thinking racoon or otter).

Book Hookers.....maybe more of a late night show with a slightly different audience :)

I could think of so many great podcast names:

Book Hookers
Cover Whores
You write it, I ream it
Sober Reads, Drunken Reviews
The hate, it festers (see what I did there?)

Paul, have you tried Spin by Robert Charles Wilson ? I didn't hear great things about the sequel, but I thought the first book could stand alone as a compelling bit of sci fi.

Spacechik | 47 comments Oh, STOP... you're killin' me. All ya'll are too funny. I have this picture of FLO in the shadows with a box of books...hey, buddy.... I am taking notes on all the 'new to me' authors and series. I'm done with Black Dagger Bros. I read three, read reviews on the rest and I'm moving on. Paul's suggestions of Peter Grant books look great to me. Yes, being a serious Jim Butcher fan, this Peter Grant series looks interesting. Keep on suggesting.
