Angie (angabel) I'm just curious what causes you all support. Social, political, environmental, religious...

I usually try to give to whatever cause is collecting: Childrens Miracle Network, Special Olympics, MS Foundation, Salvation Army, etc. But, I really push to donate as much as possible to the American Cancer Society. Both maternal grandparents died of cancer, so it hits close. Mostly driven because I hate the idea of people being sick, especially kids.

message 3: by Janet (new)

Janet I'm with Tami. I do a lot...when I can. American Red Cross, animal shelters, Susan G. Koman and Relay for Life for American Cancer society are probably my biggest!

message 4: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) I think most of us college kids do what we can when we're able. :)

I shaved my head for breast cancer and raised $200 back in 2007.

I'm pretty pro-elimination of plastic grocery bags and bottled water.

I also try to boycott Chinese goods as much as I can.

My life revolves around the Tibetan issue, however. It falls under everything: human rights, environmental issues, education, etc.

I also would like to get involved with mobile creches in India, which educate the young children (and in turn, their parents) of migrant construction workers.

message 5: by Liz (new)

Liz Although I believe in and support a lot of causes, the one I've taken the most action for is the environment. I've worked as a park ragner in two national parks, Wind Cave NP and Grand Teton NP (the first I worked as an intern for the Student Conservation Assocation). They're not the easiset jobs and working with the public can be trying at times, but they are very rewarding.
I also try to be greener at home by recycling, taking my own bags to the grocery store, and having rechargeable batteries for everything.

Liz, for one of our summer classes (management something or other) we were required to do some type of community service. Not exactly sure how that fit into the class, but anyways. One of the girls in the class went with her parents and grandmother to one of our many trails here, and on less than a mile of trail they cleaned up and cleared out over 8 pounds of glass. She says people are always picking up trash along trails when she goes hiking, but they leave the broken glass. Wow! I don't understand. If you are hiking these trails, that means you enjoy nature, so why litter? Especially breakable glass? Sorry, turned into a mini rant.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I support some political causes, like gay marriage, getting creationism out of public schools, and more free family planning and contraceptive services and general support for women in need. I'm hoping to join the Gay-Straight Alliance (or similar organization) at my college, and maybe volunteer to tutor kids if I have the time. My schedule next semester is pretty ridiculous.
For non-profits I generally try to support whoever is asking if I have any money. I'm generally very poor so that doesn't happen as often as I'd like. I have done work for Relay for Life before too. I also like to buy things at the Thousand Villages shops. They let women in developing countries make crafts and then sell them in those shops. A lot of them are really cool, and it's a great way to help out individual people.
I also give blood as often as humanly possible. It makes me feel like a super hero.

message 8: by Angie (new)

Angie (angabel) Emily, I just found out that I only have to wait another 10 months until I can give blood again. :) That made me happy.

message 9: by Emily (new)

Emily Things I support:
-gay marriage/rights. (I don't do too much with this, just try to sign petitions ect. to over turn prop 8)
-the environment. (using cloth bags, recycling, not using water bottles)
-stopping animal cruelty: inhumane treatment of animals in the food industry, using animals fur, ect. (I donate every month to the human society, go to www.hsus.org to support! I also try to buy free range eggs/chicken, vegetarian meats, and I don't eat red meat)
-locally grown produce (yay farmers markets!)
-reading (volunteering at the library, helping out with raising a reader in the fall)

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz I also have to agree witht hose who support gay/marriage rights and I have done Relay for Life, I guess the issues I discussed in my above posts are the ones which I am most active about.

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I really wish I had a cause, something that I just supported no matter what. I remember hearing that RFK, after visiting the Mississippi Delta, said to his kids, "Do you realize how lucky you have it?! Go do something!" But I agree, as a college student, funds and time are a bit short.

I use cloth bags and recycle when I can. And I try to get good for the environment cleaning products. It just doesn't feel like enough though.

I think we (our group) all do what we can when we can. Don't feel horrible that it "isn't enough". If everyone out there did just a little, things would add up.

message 13: by Jess (new)

Jess I support gay civil rights, civic awareness, and animal shelters. I don't have time to volunteer at my local humane society, which requires a number of hours per week, but I donate and advertise when possible.

message 14: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 59 comments The ASPCA, Amnesty International, The American Cancer Society, and more if I could :/

There are just so many causes that need support.

Another good topic to bring back up..

I didn't want to start another thread, and it fits with this one, so I thought I would post here.

My neice is working on two different projects and for part of the requirements she needs volunteer hours. She is 9 though she seems much older. Anyone have any great ideas for volunteer work she could do?

Last week, she helped the Special Olympic Athletes, one was my cousin, sell root beer floats for their fund raiser, and that worked out well, but now she is wondering where else she can help.

Does she like animals? The SPCA is always good.

I would check this site: www.volunteermatch.org . I had good success finding things on there.

I have a question. My mom has gotten all us girls shirts for a local Wear Pink night to raise money for breast cancer research, except my smallest neice. She is too little for a women's size shirt. Well, my sister, her mom, wants one that says "Find a cure before I get boobs." Her husband is having a fit. She is 4 and we all will have pink on, and it is a celebration/fund raiser for breast cancer, so noone else sees it as a big deal. What are your thoughts?

message 19: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'd put it on my daughter (if I had one, that is) in a heartbeat. My grandmother and two of my aunts are breast cancer survivors. And anyway, I've always loved that slogan. It makes people stop and think.

message 20: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments Like Kimberly, if I had a daughter, I'd put in on her as well. What's the reason your sister's husband doesn't want her wearing it?

He is anal! He is a cop so he is really paranoid and thinks all things reflect on him.

Looking for her a shirt, I saw some really cute ones. A couple of other favorites were one that said Fight like a girl, and had pink boxing gloves on it. Another said Saving Second Base one swing at a time, and it was a baseball tee. Obviously, that one was adult size, not childrens. One I ordered for myself, I wear pink for my Grandma.
