Diane ~Firefly~ | 8 comments Hi, my name is Diane and I just joined the group. I mostly joined to try and find some recommendations for my dad, but I also enjoy a good mystery, although I tend to lean towards cozies. I look forward to checking everything out.

My dad needs some new authors to try out because a lot of his favorites are dead and he's already read all their books. I'm listing his favorites below, so if anyone has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

Elmore Leonard
Rex Stout
Earle Stanley Gardner
Carl Hiaasen
Christopher Moore
Lisa Lutz
Tim Dorsey
Robert Parker
Stieg Larsson
John Zakour
Joan Hess

Daniel (diaze) | 1018 comments Welcome. How about Henning Mankell, Lawrence Block, Jo Nesbo and Ed McBain?

All but McBain are still alive but he compensates for this oversight by having been very prolific. :)

Ann Cleeves' Shetland Quartet books are also set in that locale.

message 11: by Joan (new)

Joan | 94 comments How about Stuart Woods, also Lee Child for his Reacher novels.

For your cozy list, I suggest Sharon Pape, Cleo Coyle and Earlene Fowler. Cleo Coyle writes a coffee house mystery series under Cleo Coyle and a haunted bookshop mystery series under Alice Kimberly. I'll soon be posting info on my own cozy series.

Joan

Welcome Diane - and Diane's Dad.

If he would like to branch out internationally I recommend Colin Cotterill's Dr. Siri series set in 1970s Laos, Andrea Camilleri's Montalbano series set in Italy, and Martin Walker's Bruno series set in France.

Welcome Denise.

Lee Mossel | 106 comments Denise wrote: "hi my name is Denise and I love a good mystery"

Welcome Denise! Review any of the author lists previously posted for suggestions. Some are more "thrillers" than mysteries. But Ann Cleves, Christopher Fowler, and Michael Connelly are particularly good. Elizabeth George mysteries are also wonderful reads but be sure to read them in sequence.

message 20: by Beth (new)

Beth | 408 comments Welcome to the group, Diane! I recommend the following authors for your father: William Kent Krueger and Craig Johnson. Also, he might enjoy my RM Outdoor Adventures series. I have a lot of male readers for that series.

Hi,

Need some direction on how to locate that one good-thread. Interested in finding something involving the spy genre, Alan Furst, Charles McCarry, etc. I tried the search tool and cruising along the threads but so far no real luck. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

message 23: by Paul (last edited Feb 04, 2014 12:43PM) (new)

Paul Hi. My name is Paul & i'm a new member. My favourite authors are;
James Ellroy
Richard Stark
James Lee Burke
I joined the group because i would like to recieve recommendations from other members & contribute reviews on books i have read & enjoyed in the past & those i read in the future. I most like psychological thrillers & what are often referred to as 'Hard Case'. I particularly like endings that are surprising & story lines that are not predictable.

Cheers, Paul

P.S. I might also add that i really like the 'noir' style of thriller. As well as the authors i have mentioned above, i would add; Dashiell Hammet, Ray Chandler, Jim Thompson, Dennis Lehane & Patricia Highsmith. In addition, Elmore Leonard & Carl Hiaasen for a lighter read.

Hi Jim
I did a little bit of searching and came up with a group for you here on goodreads. It's called Espionage Aficionados and you can find it here. Maybe this is what you're looking for?

Have downloaded several eBooks by both Billingham & Blunt. They look promising. Am currently reading 3 other novels, so will get round to reading your suggestions in due course. Thanks again.

message 39: by Emily (new)

Emily | 2 comments Hi, my name is Emily and I just joined this group because I've recently become a thriller addict, and thought it would be great to discuss books with someone, anyone. I read Gone Girl last summer, and started reading thrillers/mysteries obsessively ever since. I've always loved to read, but now I'm reading at least a book a week, sometimes up to 3 a week if I have the time. I saw that you were reading And Then there Were None and The Shining, which were both on my to read list, so this seemed like the group to join. I was challenging myself to read 52 books this year, and to read all the books on NPR's "Killer Thrillers" list in the next 2 years. But as you all probably know reading can be a bit isolating, and I thought this group might help with that. Just started the Agatha Christie. So many characters to keep track of, but the writing is great, and the premise is fun! So far so good. E

Franky | 1040 comments Hello Diane (and others), just joined the group also. Great to see so many like minded fans of thriller/mystery/crime novels.

message 41: by BeckyMG (new)

BeckyMG | 7 comments Hi, Emily! I have also just joined the group. Hope you enjoy the Agatha Christie novel.

message 42: by Lee (new)

Lee Mossel | 106 comments Welcome Emily, Franky, and BeckyMG...You've all come to the right place! This is an excellent chain and a great source of authors and booklists. Emily, if you go back several weeks, you will find several lists of both contemporary and classic thriller authors. Also, discussions as to the difference between "thrillers" and "mysteries." To some, it's important. Again, welcome!

message 43: by Bill (new)

Bill Welcome to the group, Emily, Franky and Becky. I'm sure you'll find many excellent recommendations here. Enjoy the discussions as well.
