Why Read: I've liked Moon Called and Blood Bound. I have Iron Kissed somewhere, but have not read it. I'm a UOOOR. What can you do?
Comments: The background I needed from Iron Kissed was definitely in this book and I'm glad I didn't read it. That's the main value of this book from my perspective. It saved me from having to read Iron Kissed. For personal reasons, I don't need to read another book dealing with the subject of Iron Kissed. I especially agree with that now since I was just ambushed by Christine Feehan on the same topic. More on that later. I'm giving this book a B.
7) The Darker Mask ed. Gary Phillips and Christopher Chambers (superhero anthology)385 pages. Source: Library Started: 6/8 Finished: 6/8
Why Read: I love super-heroes and I'm particularly interested in non-traditional ones. These are superhero stories by people of color including a science fiction author that I like, Steve Barnes.
Comments: The best this anthology could manage was OK. I read a few stories but nothing made an impression on me. Rating C
8)From The Mists of Wolf Creek by Rebecca Brandewyne (paranormal romance) 274 pages. Source: Drugstore Started: 6/8 Finished: 6/9
Why Read: I read one book by this author and liked it. The summary of this book on Amazon almost caused me to order it from them, but I knew I could get it quicker at the drugstore.
Comments: This book has a long portion in which nothing interesting happened and I was just turning pages waiting for it to get good. But the plot did resume eventually. The magic aspect shows that the author did a bit of research, but I suspect that not all the material was authoritative because she mis-spelled the name of a magical tool. I liked the concept, but the villains were stereotypes. I'm giving this a B-
Why Read: This is the memoirs of a wilderness activist with a Mormon background. It sounds like an interesting perspective.
Coments: This book reminds me of a biography of Iris Chang ( author of The Chinese in America) that I read. I think that Amy Irvine is probably bi-polar like Iris Chang. She did have some interesting observations about Native Americans, but when I consider her persnal behavior, it causes me to think that her conclusions should be sifted carefully. It's a very honest book, but I think the author may be projecting her own problems on all of humanity. Rating A-
10)Medicine Road by Charles De Lint (fantasy) 186 pages. Source: Amazon Started: 6/12 Finished: 6/12
Why Read: Charles De Lint is one of my favorite authors He is a master of urban fantasy, the incorporation of myth in fiction and characterization. This is an American Indian myth fantasy taking place in the Southwest.
Comments: When I looked at the number of people wanting this book on PBS, I decided to hurry up and read it. As is typical for De Lint, this book had lovely characterization and an engaging plot. I'm giving it a B
