This portion covers the whole of Book XII: A Judicial Error, starting from Chapter 1. The Fatal Day till the end of Chapter 14. Our Peasants Stood Up for Themselves.

Samuel | 7 comments Along with Andre Gide- I see Dostoevsky, and nowhere more than in the trial scenes, as closest to Rembrandt in his essential genius as an artist.

Ivan's tussle with the bailiff is practically Biblical in classic expression of the distraught radical's liability to lash out at an authority figure- and essentially from a lifetime of paternal neglect.

The human nature of the society of the spectacle, feeding greedily on the entertainment value of a family tragedy, the drama of fall from grace, and scandal.

Alyosha, believing in god, and knowing what passed between Jesus and Pilate, not expecting any certain outcome from his true testimony- willing to cheat injustice, seeing the big picture and the long view beyond the immediate tableau, the passing earthly scene.

Wondering about Zosima and Feodor Pavlovich, and that "there are no hooks in hell"...
