Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Goodness, I leave you all alone for one day and you're all plowing on brilliantly.

I'm about halfway through my first book but I did start with my longest. Still aiming for the 5 and should get them done with Tuesday off work (love random days off!).

Go Team!! :-D

Roz | 4536 comments I had some trouble today getting my reading in. Hubby wanted to go luggage shopping and it turned into one of those "while we're here why don't we look for this, this, this, and some of those" deals that had to include lunch. But I'm back to reading my Humor book and I'm half done. It's quite funny.

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments I've started my Horror pick - Rotters. It's on my old iPad which I can't upgrade to the latest operating system, nor can I upgrade the apps on it. I have to listen to this audiobook on the old iPad because it was a one time download from SYNC and I can't transfer it to my new iPad.

No big deal, right? As long as I am not listening to it in the car, it's fine. But in the car, if I put it on pause, it switches to the music on the iPad and it comes blaring out the speakers. When I resume the audiobook, it doesn't hold my place from where I left off. Grrrr!

I listened to another audiobook using Overdrive on my new iPad and never had that problem.

Solution - I'm staying home until I finish this book. Ha!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I just couldn't get into The Mysterious Affair at Styles earlier, so I switched to Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. This suited me better today, and the reading by Louis Gossett, Jr. is quite good. I have to be at work early, so I cannot stay up late enough to finish tonight, but I may get close enough that I finish listening during my commute.

I'll get back to The Mysterious Affair at Styles after that, then finish my Toppler with The Firebird, which I started on my way home from work yesterday. I considered reading that first, as it's my longest book at 14 3/4 hours. Still, it will probably be my favorite, giving me incentive to get the others finished quickly!

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments OK, I've resolved my biography issue with Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard. As long as the Toppler Meany concurs, I am on track!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Kat, you should be fine with Cherry: A Life of Apsley Cherry-Garrard for Biography. Jaxnsmom posted in the main Toppler thread, "A biography is written by someone else. A memoir/autobiography is written by the person themselves (sometimes in collaboration with someone)."

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I just finished Twelve Years a Slave for Memoir. I'll start The Mysterious Affair at Styles again during my work commute. It's a fairly short audiobook - just 6 hours, so I should finish it today or tomorrow.

I'll post one more chart update before I leave to include Casceil's finish for Science and mine for Memoir. Maybe some of you have holidays today and may have more finishes by the time I get home!

****Surprise! I'm going to say yes :) We have more super-readers than I thought, so it's only right to let them continue. I'll have to keep an eye out for how many of these readers each team has. I don't want one or two teams to have a large advantage, but go for it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Good morning Teamies. I'm about to have my first coffee of the day and bury myself in my book. I'm struggling with it a bit. It's about grave robbing. I'm not sure if any ghosts are going to turn up, or if it's just the gruesomeness of the subject matter that makes up the horror quotient. I guess I'll see.

How is everyone else doing?

I will be finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children very soon. What a quick read! That will be for YA, or mystery, or paranormal...whatever works best for the team. I will also finish my biography The Man Who Quit Money today! I stayed up half the night listening to it!

Thanks Janice! This is my first try at any challenge! I must admit, I am enjoying the competetive component! I may be able to squeak through a third book before we're finished! Who knew I could get so much reading done in so little time?! I'm surprising even myself!! Lol!

Roz | 4536 comments Finished Humor:
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. Still laughing.
If you want, Ann's book can be Mystery or Paranormal, and I can do The Giver for YA (it's short so I can do that and my Suspense book too). Just let me know.

I've got today off.

I scrapped Rotters. It just wasn't doing it for me. Instead, I started Hell House. I should finish it in the same amount of time, maybe even sooner. Rotters was 16 hours, HH is 9 hours and I have 6 hours left. I had at least 9 or 10 hours left on the other one. So this may work out even better.

Sometimes it's better to just scrap a book that isn't working and just move on to something more enjoyable.

I think I'll have time to do another audiobook. Theresa, am I still good to go with either mystery or paranormal? Which one give us the best advantage?

message 429: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Unless I'm looking at an old chart, I'm thinking mystery - and then we'd need short stories and humour to finish off that string. Whereas, paranormal would be on a string all by itself.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments String #2 - we now have the first column and one diagonal completed. Read on, Team Gold!

 photo TopplerBingo021714b_zps77efdb92.png

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Would someone like to double-check that I haven't missed any finishes? The first column down is finished, as is the diagonal from Culture to Suspense. I switched Annette and Mariab within the Culture Space, since Mariab has not yet finished her book, and using Annette's gave us a second string. The other finishes not in those strings are in yellow.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Janice, I think you're right on Mystery as your best choice.

Anne, it looks like your only options would be Paranormal or Romance, but Romance is full. If you could read Paranormal, that could help if others add on more on that line.

message 438: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59964 comments Okay, I will read Joyland for mystery.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Ann, I did miss your finish of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, since you didn't post it in the finish thread. Please be sure to do so!

I updated the chart in Message #436 to show Ann's finish.

I'm going to put that in YA. Your Biography blocks you from Mystery, and I think Anne may read Paranormal. Your YA means we just need another person to read Short Stories to finish that row.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments Anne, I believe Hex Hall should be fine for Paranormal. I'll plug you in that slot.

Good =) Whew...glad I had a book for that genre!!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments For my own reading, I'll be finished with The Mysterious Affair at Styles for Crime before it's time for bed tonight. That leaves only my Paranormal, The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley and 4 1/2 days to go!

Jaxnsmom posted this morning that if a Reader finishes all possible slots on Card #1, we can start Card #2. Only players who have maxed out their available spaces on Card #1 can play #2, and we cannot repeat any of the genres read on Card #1. However, to make any strings on #2, we'd need at least 4 readers on it. Is anyone tempted to keep on after #4 or #5, depending on how your books fall?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I finished The Mysterious Affair at Styles for Crime. I'll check for any overnight reports and do a chart update before I go to work in the morning.

message 449: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I'm more than two-thirds through my third book, and I should finish my fourth by Thursday at the latest. After that, I would have to read myth/fable to finish out my possibles on this card. We already have two people reading myth/fable (Sam and Erin), so my reading myth/fable would not count unless one of them was in a position to read something else that would help, but I might make it to a sixth book. If we do go to a second card, could I read a mystery? I have a lot of those I've been wanting to read.
