message 1: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Sorry about the lateness of this, as I had totally forgotten with the new procedures that it should have been done last month... I will post in the group announcements as well.

This thread is for nominations for our group classic fiction book to be read in August & September 2015.

Nominations will be run for 5 days and will close on July 20th.

During this time anybody can either nominate or second a book. The 6 books with the most second votes at the end of the 5 day nomination period will go into the poll. Each person can either nominate one book or second one book. There are no limits to the number of seconds a book can receive.

The poll will then run until the 25th July. Hopefully the winner will be announced the next day (I will be travelling on the 25th but should be back online by the 26th).

Leslie | 16369 comments Cathie wrote: "I would like to nominate Madame Bovary"

Oh, I will second this as I was just discussing the fact that I wanted to read this.

message 4: by Jon (new)

Jon Abbott I nominate Zuleika Dobson by Max Beerbohm, which is on the list of 100 best novels. A book and an author I hadn't heard of before. How great. A group member recently read and really liked it.

message 5: by Pink (new)

Pink I'd like to nominate The Odyssey as I'd love to read this before tackling Ulysses with the group next year.

Leslie, how serendipitous for Madame Bovary!

message 6: by E. (new)

E. | 18 comments I would like to nominate Far from the Madding Crowd.

message 7: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (maureencean) I would like to nominate East of Eden.

I will also second Zuleika Dobson.

message 8: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 15, 2015 12:42PM) (new)

I think I nominated it before and it didn't win the poll, anyway, I'd like to nominate The Master and Margarita Il Maestro e Margherita by Mikhail Bulgakov

PS- I might be irrationally in love with all the covers for this book XD it's kittens bonanza

message 9: by Jera (new)

Jera | 1 comments I'd like to second The Master And Margarita.

message 10: by katie (last edited Jul 15, 2015 01:13PM) (new)

katie | 74 comments ooo, great nominations! I would join a lot of these.

My nomination is The Wings of the Dove by Henry James, which has been sitting on my shelf for a long time. I have wanted an added incentive to move it to the top of my list.

message 11: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 88 comments I would like to second Sophie's Choice please.

message 12: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I'd like to nominate Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

Is this thread 'wrong side up' or is it just me? The thread explanation is at the bottom of the page. ?

message 13: by Nea (new)

Nea (neareads) | 7 comments I second The Master and Margarita

message 14: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Bradshaw (llawryf) | 703 comments I'll second The Odyssey. I've had it checked out from the library for awhile, but need some further incentive to read it.

message 15: by Pink (new)

Pink Bette, this thread was the 'wrong way up' for me too, it threw me for a moment. I changed the date order and it's been back to normal since.

message 16: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Pink, thanks! Early morning here for me so couldn't figure how to alter the order.

message 17: by Pink (new)

Pink Have you done it now Bette, clicking the date tab at the top? I don't know why it showed the other way though.

message 18: by Shirley (new)

message 19: by Jon (new)

Jon Abbott I assume you don't mean this Odyssey: Odyssey Odyssey (Finding Home, #1) by Sophie Kisker which is fairly decent dark erotica.

The trouble is that there are so many translations of Homer's Odyssey. If it is chosen for the poll, I hope the moderators will settle on one translation before the vote. I like Fitzgerald's, but that's only because it is what I read 40 years ago.

message 20: by Pink (new)

Pink Nope, I definitely meant Homer's Odyssey as I linked above. Translations are always a consideration whether because of age or language, but I don't see the need for uniformity in either case. This way people can pick their preferred version or grab what's most easily accessible.

Hi Maureen! You can either nominate or second but not do both. So hard to choose I know - so many good books to choose from! :) But when you get a chance, let us know which one you'd rather do.

Hmmm. Probably that is from the link I sent out as descending order is the way I normally view GoodReads. Funny though as it hasn't been an issue before and I didn't do anything different...

Leslie | 16369 comments Mary Glass wrote: "I would like to nominate A Confedracy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole."

I think this would be more suited to the group fiction read that the classics. Please do nominate it for that when those nominations open.

I also felt that Sophie's Choice was a borderline case but it had already been seconded before I saw its nomination. If that doesn't make this poll, it would also be a candidate for the group fiction imo.

message 50: by Leslie (last edited Jul 17, 2015 05:17AM) (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I think I have correctly updated the seconds in post #40. Alice, I assumed you were seconding Les Mis but now looking at your comment, I am not sure.

Keep the seconds coming -- the top 4 are fairly clear now but lots of choice for the last spot in particular!
