Impressions on Calcifier?

I LOVE Calcifer - I think he is a great character. He served to reflect much about Howl as well as interjecting humor and mystery.

I loved Calcifer too. The whole "fire demon" (that is the correct phrase, right?) name had me a little worried that he would turn out to be bad somehow. But I really, really liked him.

I loved the whole thing about calcifer how he used to be a falling star and his relationship with How'l it was comical am I wrong or do I remember right was the lump Howl's heart????

Cable, as I understand it, Howl's heart is what kept Calcifer alive. If Howl took his heart back, Calcifer would die. That was the contract between them. Thanks to Sophie's magic, Calcifer was able to live without Howl's heart, so Howl could have it back.

I love how snarky Calcifer is. He pretty much steals every scene he's in. You could say that in a way, he's the heart of the whole story. I'll confess, though -- when I picture him in my head, I can't help seeing him as the Calcifer as portrayed in the Miyazaki film -- all cute and blobby. Which is wrong, but it somehow also works that way.

I liked that Jones brought in the Witch's fire demon near the end for contrast. I wondered if Calcifer were supposed to be nicer than the other demon because Howl had a better heart, or it the demons had their own good and bad traits which influenced their people.
