Woohoo! We are all on the ball this month! Thanks, Lahni & Lyn M for their prompt responses.

Lyn has picked Recommendations for August.

I see a lot (and I mean, a LOT) of very popular books here... though there are 2 obscure ones near the top of the first page (???)

Have you recommended any of these books to your friends? Which book/s have been recommended to you... if you've not read it yet, I think it's time ;)

Coralie | 1658 comments Those two obscure ones look very suspicious to me.

I see what you are looking at, Coralee and Tien. That is a bit suspicious.....

Don't you sometimes wish that you could see who put the books on the shelves?

You can actually, if you click on the bit that says "shelved x times as recommendations" if will give you a list.

I did not know that, Sarah. That is good to know.

So after looking at your list there are a couple others that I might add to mine, but MY recommendation to you would be Life After Life. I thought that book was really interesting.

Amanda | 380 comments At this stage I am saying

American Gods
The Handmaid's Tale

because I don't think I will get to them this month, but it really depends on what I get through this month. I seem to have read a lot on the list, and I am trying to not read anything I don't already own at the moment.

Of course, it depends what I can pick up at the library book sales next weekend, TWO DAYS of sales from one of our favourites, so hopefully we will pick up a few good books :D

I'm eyeing The Secret History... I think I tried to read it a long time ago but gave up (can't remember why) so I'm keen to give it another go; anyone up for a read along in August? lol

I seem to read better with read along (World Without End the only one I've failed to date :p)

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments Hey! I'm new, but I'm already considering what I could read for next month. Like Amanda, I'm trying very hard not to read anything I don't own at the moment, as I already have around 400 books in my TBR pile (owned physical books and ebooks)!

I'm considering those:

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Gathering Blue (The Giver, #2) by Lois Lowry Perfume The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind

Plus, if I ever decide to buy some:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam, #1) by Margaret Atwood The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb I Am Malala The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

...OK, I see most of them are on my wishlist, but I still own some and I might try those.

I just finished The Secret History as one of my POTS books, so I'd be glad to join in on the discussion if I can keep clear on where you are in your reading so I don't give things away. I think it's a book that can benefit from discussion.

I REALLY want to read that book, but don't have time for huge ones right now, although I might be persuaded.....

message 17: by Leo(nie) (new)

Leo(nie) (lemongreen_bird) I might finally Pride and Prejudice. I love the movie adaptions and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I've never read the original.

I could also finish The Magicians which I stopped reading because I got mad at the main character.

If I have time, I'll read The Bell Jar.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) by Lev Grossman The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

Not sure which of these I'll try -- certainly not all, since I'm involved in two buddy reads at the moment. But they give me a good place to start. It's a friendly shelf, doesn't require me stretching at all.

Paper Towns
Delirium
Fangirl
And the Mountains Echoed
Quiet
The Martian
Dark Places
Girl of Fire and Thorns
City of Ember

message 19: by Leo(nie) (new)

Leo(nie) (lemongreen_bird) The Martian is awesome. I'm so excited for the movie!
