RandomAnthony | 14536 comments ...and apparently Jackie O and her brother in law were slutty.

Seriously, who f--king cares about the Kennedys? What's this whole "Camelot" thing? I just don't get it. Maybe they were before my time, but that family seems to have, ahem, perhaps more than it share of drunks and f--k-ups. Ok, maybe the JFK guy was an ok President. And Ted Kennedy seems to be ok when he's not, um, doing bad things. I don't know. But I don't hear people saying other presidents' families are American royalty or whatever. Somebody explain this whole Kennedy mystique to me.

message 2: by Lori (new)

Lori You had to have been there, RA, you had to have lived through those times or else know your history really really well. America went to the dogs after JFK died. Actually, it's Robert who I mourn even more. He shoulda coulda woulda.

I'm not sure I believe that anyway. Tabloid gossip?

And I guess I'm so blinded behind my rose glasses, I find it kind of hawt. And I'm glad Jackie had some hot steamin love if it's true!

Youth is SO wasted on the young.

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Thank god for Bun who is so effective at describing things!

message 6: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Amen, Lori.

message 7: by Lori (new)

Lori Yeah, I don't pay much attention to any Kennedy in the present day. I was rather sad when Jr. died, tho. Who knows what he might have become.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments To dimiss Matt's comments as in msg. 5 is incredibly patronizing. In many areas Matt runs intellectual circles around us all.

I wasn't around in the early sixties...just the last couple of months. I guess I'm fascinated with how the Kennedy myth has endured. Like when...the one who crashed his plane and his blonde girlfriend (the one who dated Antonio Sabato Jr...and yes, I think it's interesting that I can remember his name but not the others') died. People made a big deal out of it...I didn't get that.

I also thinking calling people from WW2 "The Greatest Generation" is weird.

message 9: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I don't give a rat's butt about the "mystique." But to say that "they didn't do anything useful" is just plain ignorant. I don't dismiss his intellectual prowess -- but I refuse to just agree with nonsense like that because of it.

My comment fully acknowledges that I, too, was ignorant when I was his age, and didn't understand how historical events and perspectives have value in my life.

And I know he just tries to get the old folks riled up, too. :)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I remember the day JFK, Jr's plane disappeared like you would NOT believe... it was on a day when we had to change the clocks and I ended up showing up to work TWO hours early somehow. It was the first thing I spotted coming down off the wire. I was so entranced by the news (and hoping they'd find John and Caroline Bessette - that was her name, RA - and her sister alive and well, maybe a bit shaken up) and upset about it. Regular television programming was interrupted to follow the spot news, and Peter Jennings was reporting from the newsdesk. I got TONS of phonecalls from people who were disappointed (read "PISSED & MEAN") that the golf show on tv was interrupted. I went out to dinner that night at a Mexican restaurant with a bunch of my coworkers and some of the peeps from the other TV news stations. Everyone was talking about the day's news in such a detached manner... and I was utterly emotionally affected. Someone pointed out to me that if I was so distressed every time tragedy struck, then maybe I should consider that I might be in the wrong profession. It was the first time I seriously considered that maybe a career in journalism was not for me. To this day, I don't understand my over-the-top upset about that particular tragedy. I didn't care one iota about the tabloid news reports on John, Jr. or Caroline up until then. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps my perception up to that point was that JFK's kids seemed to be media savvy and fairly well adjusted, considering the fact that they grew up under media scrutiny. Maybe it was that I was holding out hope for a happy ending for them because I'd wish that for any human being.

The picture of "John John" saluting his dad's casket still moves me. Profoundly.

Someone once told me the Kennedys were the closest thing America had to a royal family, a la the Windsors, full of mystique and scandal and tragedy. I think the description's a bit exaggerated, but it makes sense.

Fair enough...just be ready for people disagreein' with you and characterizing you in certain ways, too. Fight it out. You and I, Larry, by the way, can't use youth as an excuse. Fading intellectual powers, maybe...

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Is Ted Kennedy still alive? I saw him on the news the other day. I thought he died a while back... several times, but he keeps coming back. He's like a kitty cat with nine lives.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I love that Arnold is a repub politician and married into the Kennedy clan. :) I wonder if they have family night when they spend their holiday together in Hyannis Port and watch Kindergarten Cop together... or even better, have talent night and everyone asks Arnold for an encore of "I'll be back" or "It's not a tumor." I think that'd be v. amusing.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

The in-thing to shout around Ah-nuld is "EVERYONE! GET TO THE CHOPPAH!"

I'm sure he's tempted to say that as California keeps sliding into a fiscal morass...

message 16: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jul 07, 2009 07:37AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ooh, Heidi, I forgot about that...I wonder if the older Kennedys freaked when Arnold started hanging around the family...

hee hee.

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Everybody knows Arnold isn't a "real" Republican. Democrats in Texas are much farther to the right than he is.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I knew that. I wonder if they freaked because he was a gigantic, ex-steroid using, semi-coherent former actor turned quasi-politician just in it for the continual limelight.

Somehow I see the constitution being rewritten so that Mr. Schwarzanegger can become president by 2010 because there are no other viable options for the Republican party.

p.s. where's California Sarah? She'd light my ass on fire for all the republican hate I'm spewing today.

They freak me out. I can't understand how they can disagree on something as fundamental as personal ideology.

message 24: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I don't get it either. Political compatibility is one of my main relationship criteria now. Of course, my ex-husband was a Republican when we first met, but he eventually saw the light and converted.

;)

message 25: by Heidi (last edited Jul 07, 2009 12:44PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments The content of ideology isn't the deciding factor with those kinds of successful relationships - passion and respect and intellectual stimulation are. They like a good challenge and debate. While in some cases this could be a detriment to the relationship, I know that in others' it works and can be a positive influence. Some have a rule to not bring the work home with them.

I'd say that I was witness to more than enough of that around my own home, but my dad's/stepmother's marriage is no longer. :) It was exciting while it lasted, though. I loved dinnertable conversation around their home.

message 26: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Kennedy was hot. Marilyn Monroe sang for him. That's hot.

I think that's why people remember them ;)

Not really. Just kidding but it does leave an impression. My thing is will they be remembered generations from now. I mean do we have the same impression of Teddy Roosevelt as others did in those days?

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

By the way, ask me who REALLY killed JFK.

The answer will shock you.

message 28: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Okay -- I'll bite. Who did?

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Joe DiMaggio.

Think about it.

message 30: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I am.

message 31: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Gus...

message 32: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Like...DiMaggio pulled the trigger, or DiMaggio was behind it?

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

DiMaggio was behind the assassination. We all know that, even after they divorced, Joe and Marilyn were still fond of one another. Joltin' Joe didn't take too kindly to either Jack or Bobby using Marilyn like some hooker on shore leave - yeah, they covered up her death - so he arranged to have JFK shot.

He wasn't behind RFK's murder, though.

message 34: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) Gus: hooker on shore leave

You have a way with words. I'll consider your conspiracy just as I did with the magic bullet! It really did MAGIC!

message 38: by RandomAnthony (new)
