Dragonhaven by Robin McKinley, gotta be.

I second Dragonhaven. It's an awesome book.

I guess this can be moved to "Now we'll never know"?

Here is the description that was deleted.

"I read this book maybe one or two years ago, I think it was a new book at the time. The story was about a young man who finds an injured dragon who was pregnant and having difficulty laying her egg. The boy helps her and is given the egg and asked to raise it since she was going to die. I remember the cover art was just a dragon egg that was cracked open. This is not eragon or Temeraire.
