D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments Hi everyone,
I've been trying to sort out my Amazon.com tax for months now as their tax form says that I am eligible for a 0% tax bill from the IRS. However, they require a TIN number (which Britain does not issue) and if you don't have a TIN you are automatically charged tax a 30%.
I've tried contacting Amazon, I've even called HRMC, but no one has an answer for this chicken and egg situation.

I'd really appreciate any help you can give me!!!

I don't know whether it was right but the system accepted it

That's strange, because the site I was looking at said that a URT couldn't be used.

Thank you, Peppermint P!!! Xxx
I wasn't sure if it would be cheeky or not...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Course it's not cheeky!

I'll see if I can find one of the good threads for you, too.

Sorry I can't help. Not being an author, I've not memorised the info. ;)

The problem is that I've already sent off the form once and thought I'd sorted it. I only noticed a couple of months ago that they were still withholding at 30%.

Tim | 8539 comments It's just your UK tax code now, and tick a few boxes. Waaaaay easier than it used to be. :)

That would be the URT that Jim was talking about, right Tim???

Tim | 8539 comments Yeah. It's months since I did my tax return - I tend to block that stuff out!

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Speaking of which, I've been trying to get in touch with HMRC about tax on UK sales. Does anyone know what the self employed threshold is for paying Tax. Not that I'be made anything yet, and my first royalty payment is only likely to be £20, but I want to be above board about it.

message 15: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments It'll depend on your current tax allowance and how much of that you're using.
Also what legitimate business expenses are there to set against this £20 income?

Call for Will, he knows

As far as paying tax, the threshold is £10,000 whether from one job or several. If you pay £9,000 on PAYE, you have an unused allowance of £1,000 on your books. NI is calculated separately, though.

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments I think I'd best try and contact them again, see what they say. Thanks for the advice though.

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments Just to be clear will the URT word for smashwords as well???

John Sugden | 13 comments It may not be of any help but an article in my paper this morning tells me that the current personal allowance is £10,600 but National Insurance kicks in earlier at £8,060
