I had read Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata and liked it and read also The Ramayana: A Shortened Modern Prose Version of the Indian Epic by R.K. Narayan.

The book that suggested you Anupam is amazing, it is a must read!

If you want there is also Yuganta: The End of an Epoch but I don't know if this is what you are looking for.
