Harry Potter discussion

To be honest I think there will be. Especially after reading the last chapter of the 7th book. She has made a great series for all ages and I hope that she is able to come up with something even greater.

Books become a alternate reality for most especially when things in life don't go as planned and these books make you see that all things in life don't turn out, but that doesn't mean that life can't be fun and interesting.

I think she has said that something like Hogwarts: A History will come out, but after that she is done with the series and the characters. I would like to see her do something similar to what Tolkien did with The Similarian for LOTR... create history books about other things, which make the wizarding world more real.

If you sold 11 million copies at 20 bucks a pop in one night, would you continue with the story?

I think I would be very interested to see Harry in his later years, and what becomes of all the characters. The last chapter of the 7th book satisfied everything I needed to know... It was a great note on which to end.

I would like to see the story of what was going on at Hogwarts and with the OotP during the events of Deathly Hallows. I wouldn't mind reading about Ginny and Neville plotting to steal Godric's sword and keeping up the resistance.

Perhaps she will do something like the star wars series and go back to when some of the teachers were students and let us in on their lives.

On the Today Show, Rowling mentioned that she'll probably follow up with a Harry Potter encyclopedia. Hopefully it will have enough details to keep us occupied for another 10 years... I'd be pretty satisfied if it covered the wizarding world from Hogwarts to the present day, and tied the rest of the world into the world of Harry Potter.

Really, Priya? I loved Deathly Hallows as a whole, but I hated the epilogue... I found it to be ridiculously cheesy. Jo did say that she had written an original epilogue that was "a lot more detailed... but it didn't work very well as a piece of writing" (Sandy already provided the link to that interview in her post). I understand that she didn't want to just pack in a bunch of extra information, but I would much prefer an epilogue detailing the occupations of the trio, Luna, Neville (which she did include), tell what happened to the Dursleys, how the Ministry & Hogwarts have changed, etc., as opposed to what we got... I did like some parts of the epilogue, but as a whole, it seemed far too cheesy to me (almost like a fanfic!), especially after she had just ended on a far more serious, poignant note.

Michael, you're right, Jo did mention that she will "probably" create an encyclopedia in several years' time, so we will at least have that to look forward to! Casey, she has said that she will NOT "pull a George Lucas" and write any prequels... I don't remember where the interview is, but you can look it up. She feels it would be "shamelessly exploitative" to do that. And she has also said that she has absolutely no plans to continue a sort of "Hogwarts: the Next Generation" for the trio's children, or anything like that. :)

With the ending of the book, I am hoping there will be more. There could be some really great spinoffs ;)

I'm a huge fan, as you can see, but I hope J.K. doesn't write anymore HP books. I agree that the epilogue was ridiculously cheesy. I felt it was a cop out. She didn't want to write anymore books, so she tacked on this epilogue to show us the future lives of the characters. I was left unsatisfied. Having said that--I still hope she doesn't write on the HP series anymore. I think it is better to end gracefully instead of milking the series for everything it's worth. It seems that some writers just can't find anything else to write about. So they just keep writing prequels and companion books, etc. I say, let the original series stand. It's wonderful and complete as is. I'm more insterested in reading some "adult" fiction from J.K. What will her imagination bring us next?

Well, its easy to admit and make oneself believe that there should be more of the HP series. Most of us want to see more of that world, but really speaking, I do not see JK writing any more continuums ala George :-)

Yeah i hope she can make like J.R.R made 'Shaping the Middle earth' or 'The Silmarillion'-'root' of the story.. or publish 'History of Magic' to muggles like us, lol

i would absolutely LOVE it if she continued. but will she? i think she will. i mean, not for the money, but for the shear habbit of it. i mean, she must have spent a LOT of time on those books. what does she have to fill her time up w/ if she doesn't? i bet not writting about beloved Harry will be weird for her.

i don't think there will be more and, moreover, i don't think there should be. the best way to kill a good series (in either books or movies) is to make too many sequels and prequels. i know she loved writing the stories, but it also took a lot out of her. i think dedicating 13 years to harry potter has been enough to last her the rest of her lifetime. i am looking forward to the encyclopedia, but i think a lot of it will be information that she wrote but had to leave out of the books for length's sake.

michelle, i totally agree that i would love her to write some adult fiction. the way she puts these characters together and weaves her storylines would surely make her an amazing adult fiction writer.

I'd like to see more on Harry Potter and his friends. I'm in agreement of some of the posts here that J.K. Rowling left things a little open-ended....like what happened to the Dursleys. It was good that she had that epilogue at the end - but I'm going to want to know more about Harry & Ginny's kids & Ron & Hermione's kids.

I'm completely torn on this. I would love to have a Harry Potter Encyclopedia so I would know the history of Hogwarts and what the trio and friends are doing as adults -- careers, children, spouses etc. I saw the interview on MSN that Sandy put in her post and JK says the encyclopedia would detail how Ron and Harry end up reforming the Ministry and how Hermione is involved in magical law. I would love to know how they all decided to follow those paths and what their children are like and what happened to the Dursleys after they were escorted away from their home. So many questions I have.

BUT, I would not be heartbroken if JK decided to just let the series end with book 7 and not write another HP book or appendix or anything. I think this series took a lot of JK's energy and became very personal for her, which is understandable. She deserves a break. :)

Although, I would definitely be at the bookstore with money in hand to buy the HP encyclopedia if she wrote one.

Another vote for how cheesy the epilogue was. The only thing I was glad she restrained herself on was difinately hooking Neville to Luna. I love both characters but while they seemed like a good match earlier when they were on the "loony fringe" they both became so much more - and it would have been too simple to link them for life.

I think the series is done. School books won't hurt, but if more books came out I think it would ruin the series.

Well, for one, I think she the epilogue was perfect. It was cyclical, mirroring Harry's own first passage to Hogwarts and Rowling, in telling that story, gives you a window into Harry's adult life. It wasn't mired in facts and details but just, stylistically, beautiful nonetheless. I would also say that, as far as Harry is concerned, the series should and I believe is done. He has had to go through enough. Let his life be just what that passage suggests...peaceful and full of happy family memories that he was robbed of. However, despite that being said, I wouldn't mind some type of short story collection in which adventurous tales of other characters were told and our favorites made guest appearances. "Hogwarts: A History" would also be nice. Either way, it's like Rowling said. For the next few years, it's not really over. We have two more movies AND a theme park to look forward to!!!

I sorta believe that there will be more, and part of me thinks that J.K. is done with HP. :(

Yes, I noticed that as well. Wouldn't you just love to have a story in the point of one of the newer generations wizards? Or just a continuation of the history would be great as well.

Personally I think that if she wrote that lame epilogue, chances are the series is over. Why write a suckish epilogue and then continue the series. It would be one thing if the epilogue was actually good, then it would probably capture the attention of the reader. But what she wrote, chances are that nobody would want to read after the lame epilogue!

It depends there are actually some people that liked the epilogue. Even those that did not like it most would be lined up if Jo was brining out new book that was based in the Harry Potter world. I know I would and I wouldn’t call myself a big fan of the epilogue though it has grown on me a bit.

Obviously as far as we know at this point she has no plans to write a book with one of Harrys children as the main character or even someone else as the main character.

but she said Harry would not be the main characters, and it would be AGEAS until she at least STARTS to write it.

Bu i want it to happen! Maybe just a short novel about each main character, and what they are doing now.
EG: 1 chapter on each person, maybe chose 10 main characters, and write one chapter of their day-today lives.

I don't know, I really would like to read more about Harry, but I agree that I liked where the series ended. I would more like to see what happened to harry and Ginny's and Ron and Hermione's kids.

OMGSH BTW there is a HP summer camp that Shae and I might go to! It is at JCCC, A collage in KS, and you go and it's basically like a science class, only Hogwarts themed!!! I can't wait,but it's $54 so IDK if I can go or not... :(

Truthfully, however much i love the story, going on will ruin the story. Harry's story is over, and I don't think there should be a Hogwarts without Harry

I think that Harry's story is over. What else could she write about Harry? I think that anything else would be just fanfiction. (hopefully)

I agree that Harry's story is over, and I don't think a series about his children could ever live up to the original series. I would still like books from the world of Harry Potter. They wouldn't have to be stories though - I mean something more like Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
