Aliens have basically taken over the world and reduced humans to "horses" and breed them like we breed show dogs or horses, etc. They are smarter than humans but weaker and smaller. They need the men to carry them around because their legs are not strong enough.

I remember the cover of one version had a very tribal looking man standing in front of a forest.
