Sarah | 18550 comments After you have read your chosen book for this month's group theme read, please report in the thread below. Please state what book you read (and link it), that you discussed it, and briefly summarise what you thought of the book and/or link to your review if you have written one.

In order to receive a badge you must:
1. have completed the book before or during August 2015.
2. discussed it in the relevant thread. Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favourite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc. You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in that thread.
3. Report that you have read AND discussed the book in the reporting thread below.

message 5: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I read Pompeii and discussed it over in that thread. I enjoyed it and am giving it 4 stars. This was my first by Harris and I'm going to try more of his stuff. I felt it was a good natural disaster read and gave me a good idea of the times. It was a quick read.

message 6: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments So Sarah, if I read both books for this month before August (December 2014 for Pompeii and March 2015 for The Aeneid) can I still report them??

I have joined in both discussions in their relevant threads.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes you can report them and therefore get a badge as long as you've discussed them in the relevant threads (which you have).

message 8: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1789 comments Thanks, I just wanted to clarify, it's never come up for me before. :)

message 16: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I read Rubicon which is set in ancient Rome and is part of a series I've been reading for a while. I really enjoy getting my history lessons while reading a good fiction in the form of a mystery.

message 17: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments I read The Seven Wonders, which is the prequel to the series that Debra read. I really like Saylor's writing, though this is a book that people should read after getting into the series. It covers the main character's travels when he was young, and I don't think it would mean much unless you knew about his mature character. Also, it was originally a bunch of short stories that have been strung together to make a single narrative. This means that each chapter is a mini story, so the overall book has less impact. I did enjoy it, while it wasn't as involving as the books in the series, it was pleasant despite some of the disturbing realities of the times.

message 18: by Ariane (last edited Aug 24, 2015 03:07AM) (new)

Ariane | 947 comments I read Pompeii and discussed it in the discussion thread. I also read Mistress of Rome and shared my thoughts in the discussion thread, but I don't know if I can report several books, I don't think it changes anything.

message 19: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments Just finished my book Curses and Smoke, I gave it 2 stars as I think it was a little too young for me, I really liked that it was set in the time around Pompeii when the volcano erupted as I hadn't read anything about it. I also discussed it in the thread as well

message 20: by Caitlin (last edited Aug 26, 2015 04:22AM) (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments I read Tiger, Tiger and wrote my thoughts in the appropriate thread I believe.

The Ancient Rome Thread that is.

message 21: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 806 comments I read Maximus by Richard L. Black and discussed it in the Ancient Rome thread.

message 22: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Sarah, I finished Pompeii early this morning and posted a review. I thought it was a great story, exciting, informative, and had a great ending. 1,936 years ago today, Mt. Vesuvius finished burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculeneum, but the Aqua Augustua continued to deliver water, as it was meant to do, regardless of how mother nature tried to interfear.

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad you enjoyed it Cherie. It seems that on the whole most people enjoyed it (compared to The Aenid).

Recorded up to here.

message 24: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Finished The Aeneid, and discussed it in the relevant thread.

message 25: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments I read the Aeneid, and discussed it in its assigned thread. I am very glad to have read it, and also glad to have finished it. In the early parts it was very impressive. By the end, it had become much too much, particularly the gory battle scenes. Those of us discussing the book did agree on the following:
1. Aeneas was totally clueless about talking to women.
2. Juno was really bratty, and caused no end of trouble.

Discussed in the Ancient Rome thread.

message 28: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I read The Silver Pigs and discussed it in the Ancient Rome thread. I really liked that besides being a good mystery story, it provided a lot of historical info. It's the first in a series I plan to continue.

message 29: by Teanka (new)

Teanka I read A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening by Mário de Carvalho and written about it in the Ancient Rome thread.
