What do you plan to read in August?

I am counting on finishing Hothouse by Brian W. Aldiss Hothouse by Brian W. Aldiss (from Netgalley)

Then I would like to get to a couple of books I got from the author:

Fiery Arrow by Sheila R. Lamb Fiery Arrow and Once a Goddess by Sheila R. Lamb Once a Goddess by Sheila R. Lamb (or vice versa, I never can tell which comes first and the blurbs don't make it easy to understand imo).

I am also contemplating reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass 100th Anniversary Edition by Lewis Carroll Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass: 100th Anniversary Edition

and whatever other books I have listed in my 20 books of summer challenge, as well as any Netgalley books (I am really trying to get that feedback rate up!).

What are you planning to read during August?

Kandice I'll finish Drawing of the Three and hopefully get through The Waste Lands The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, #3) by Stephen King , Sleep Donation Sleep Donation by Karen Russell , Ender's Game Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet, #1) by Orson Scott Card and the entire Locke & Key, Vol. 1 Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill series. I only own four and was waiting on a couple from the library. I got the call today that they are available. Wa hoo!

Kandice I think Red Dragon is even better than Silence of the Lambs, so I hope you like it!

message 4: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I haven't seen the show, but Red Dragon is almost entirely about Frances Dollarhyde. I wonder which parts Fuller liked.

Melaslithos | 1645 comments This month, first of all, I want to finish:
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Then I am planning on reading:
Sleep Donation by Karen Russell Circling the Sun A Novel by Paula McLain Chocolat by Joanne Harris The Unknown Terrorist by Richard Flanagan The Coroner's Lunch (Dr. Siri Paiboun, #1) by Colin Cotterill Constellation by Adrien Bosc On Beauty by Zadie Smith
That's quite a lot, so I'm not sure I'm going to read all of them, but I think I'll pick from this list.

message 6: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I hope you do read Sleep Donation when we do! It's short, so...

Chocolat is wonderful, so I can't wait to hear what you think.

message 7: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Don't worry, Sleep Donation is a sure thing. The doubt rest in the others.

Click on it, silly! You should join us for the buddy read. It's short, so shouldn't be hard to fit in. It's also very cheap. At least where I am.

Kandice Are you GR on a PC or laptop? You can download a free Barnes & Noble Nook app and read it there. Or, at least you can in America. I'm not sure about where you are. Maybe an Amazon Kindle app? I don't do Amazon, so am not sure about that.

Oi, I totally forgot Bird Box by Josh Malerman Bird Box by Josh Malerman; we're supposed to be having a buddy read of it around the third week of August.

I haven't read the manga Fate/Zero, but I have quite fond memories of the anime.

It's a novel, though it does have a manga as well. I liked the anime too, reading the original; the anime is an extremely good adaptation.

I got The Library at Mount Char from Blogging for Books and I really want to read it soon. I know it is wrong but I am totally in love with that cover!!

wanting to read a book because of its cover seems wrong and i am probably setting myself up for a major disappointment. the blurb sounds interesting but the cover is what drew me in.

ahah good point!
reviews do matter to me, though. and despite all the high ratings for Angelfall I know I would probably not enjoy it.

cannot recall specifics anymore but the whole concept did not appeal to me because it sounded like more of the same. I don't think I would like the main character and am not a fan of the angels thing. At this point I really crave something new.

message 18: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I never read anything labeled as YA until my children started reading it and now that they are older, I still read a lot of it. Yes, much of it is same ol'/sale ol', but you really do find some gems.

True, I just do not have that persistence anymore, at least for now. I have grown to enjoy psychological thrillers very much, something I did not use to read at all.

My favourite genre is still realistic fantasy, though.

message 20: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I went through about five years where I was reading psychological thriller/procedurals almost exclusively. Have you read any Patricia Cornwell or Thomas Harris? James Patterson's early stuff is good too, but I don't think he actually writes any of the newer stuff with his name on it.

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
No, I haven't... Not that big on procedural stuff, to be honest.
I think I might like Gillian Flynn but I have so much stuff to read from Netgalley and authors I don't think I will be buying anything anytime soon.

message 22: by Melaslithos (last edited Sep 04, 2015 06:50AM) (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I've had a super busy month of August (and I'm going to have an even busier month of September). Which means of course that I didn't read as much as I would have liked to, and as expected, didn't read all I planned to.

Here is the result of my August readings:
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh Sleep Donation by Karen Russell Constellation by Adrien Bosc The Wailing Arhats by Xiao Xuan'an Chocolat by Joanne Harris

message 23: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I finished what I planned on reading with some bonuses. I don't often stick to a plan so I'm pretty happy with that.

message 24: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments I've engaged in several reading groups/books exchanges this year. While it's absolutely great for discovering new things (and I really really loved some of those, that I would never have picked up by myself), I think next year I'll just stop, and read what tempts me at the moment, not stick to a plan. My schedule is far to hectic to stick to any plans, it's far too much efforts for me.

message 25: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I could not agree more! I always read my face-to-face book club choice each month, but I am a happier reader when I just go with the flow for the rest.

I definitely read much more than I thought I would, a total of 12 books.

You can find my monthly wrap-up post here, if curious.

Melissa Schubert | 21 comments I just started reading Love Letters to the Dead last night then plan on reading Red Queen and The Martian. If I can actually make it to a fourth book then I might move on to The Enchanted

message 28: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I want to read The Enchanted! The Martian was amazing. I hope you like it.
