Addy | 5111 comments So far it's Addy and Nolan. We will be starting on the 9th. Right now this book is .99 cents through valencourt books. Don't pass it up!

Char | 17459 comments Ha! :)

message 7: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I just picked this one up, too! It looks great but I'm not sure when I'll be able to start it. I look forward to seeing what you guys think.

message 8: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Alright! This is it! First 3 chapters and discuss tomorrow. I'm starting now:)

message 9: by Char (new)

Char | 17459 comments I'm not sure when I can start either as my mom is now in the hospital. She's okay, so no worries, but I'm going to be visiting quite a bit. Anyway, I'm still going to try to participate and we'll see how it goes. :)

message 10: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Glad to know your mom is doing ok:) just take your time. The chapters seem longish.

Hope your mom stays cheery in the hospital, that's hard. Get her a good book ;) I'm going to try to read the first few chapters tonight (although I've been clean passing out while reading every night this week).

message 12: by Char (new)

Char | 17459 comments Thanks all, you're the best. :)

message 13: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Read the first 3 chapters. This book is fascinating, glad I chose to join in. It really is a delicious mystery, new odd characters walking into the story with little tidbits of JS.

message 14: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yeah so the first 3 chapters were pretty good. It's weird how these people are coming out of nowhere to discuss the mysterious Jonathan. This feels very literary as well and I find myself highlighting a lot.

message 15: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I am also highlighting a lot-- must be some clever prose!

message 16: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments So today, it's 4, 5, and 6. Good luck!

message 17: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I have to say this guy has my dream job, just sitting in a library all day going through books at my leisure...

message 18: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yes, that would be the life...:)

message 19: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Omg! These chapters are long. I may have to retreat and read 2 a day instead. How bout we just use spoilers? I'll prob be at a slower pace than the 2 of you.

We have some weird psychic thing going on because I read two chapters last night and promptly fell asleep two pages into chapter 6, wishing it wasn't 30 minutes long! 2 would be great or spoilers as well.

message 22: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Cool! I was so worried you guys were way ahead...lol. I'm fine with 2 chapters:) lets go to ch7 today and then start with 2 chapters tomorrow. Sound good?

message 24: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments So does anyone think that Scrivener could be Jame's father? Prob not, but just a thought.

message 25: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Also, does this bug anyone else that when the author says someone has "called" I always think a telephone call and not that someone is at the door. Is this an English thing?

message 26: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Yes that's an English thing.

message 27: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Oh ok. I'll have to get used to it...lol. I'm not much of a fan for Rivers. I think I like Middleton much better. What does everyone think so far? We're almost halfway through.

message 28: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Hmm...I like how you think Nolan. Great theory!

message 29: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments 8 and 9 tonight, right? Can't wait to see who the heck Scrivener really is?!

message 30: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments 7 and 8, but u can go ahead if u like. I haven't even started 7 yet...lol.

message 31: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Ok. I had to take a minor break from this but now that I'm back to it, I'm enjoying it so much more, especially the meeting at Pauline's house. I'm a little behind but hoping to catch up by the end of the day.

message 32: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Oh, I'm all out of order, i think i'm getting more unsure of what's going on rather than less, lol

message 33: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Francesca's story was heartbreaking. I kept wondering about her and was glad to hear her story...finally.

message 34: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yes, I kept wondering the same thing Nolan. Was kinda odd. It was almost like a curse word or something...lol.

message 35: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments "See life with the eyes of ghost." What does that mean?

message 36: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Nolan wrote: "Addy wrote: "Ok. I had to take a minor break from this but now that I'm back to it, I'm enjoying it so much more, especially the meeting at Pauline's house. I'm a little behind but hoping to catch ..."

That's another British thing. I remember a long time ago reading Jane Austen and other British authors and for whatever reason sometimes place names and people's names are 'lined' out like that.

message 37: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yes, middleton's was sad as well. Perhaps that is why I like him. Wexham has become somewhat of a a psychologist. Still, I'm not sure how I feel about him. He's definitely great at reading ppl. I wonder if that's because he's well read or because of the isolation he endured?

Thanks Maxine. I was wondering if that was a English thing too.

message 38: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I like Middleton. I think he and Pauline would make a great couple, both of them looking for a different sort of life, unhappy with the limited avenues society has to offer. Francesca rubs me a little wrong. I find her pretty selfish. I get who she's supposed to be but I feel like she's the one doing 'experiments' on the people around her. Rivers is exhausting to read about. His existence is purely sensory, its all outward.

And of course James Wexham is like the 'blank' character, really no personality other than that he is like a wall people bounce things off of...

message 39: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Completely agree:) Now that I'm done work...time to read on!

message 40: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Wow! That's great. TBH, I'm having a hard time finishing. There are some parts that are great and others that are slow moving. Might take me a few more days to finish.

message 41: by Maxine Marsh (last edited Aug 15, 2015 10:33AM) (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I'm still working on it too!

message 42: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Ok I finished. Turns out being sick in bed for 2 days has been good for my reading. I'm interested to see what the two of you think.

message 43: by Maxine Marsh (last edited Aug 16, 2015 05:40AM) (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments Yes, no problem Addy, we will wait. Nolan, I think the book was an easy 4, if not a 4.5. I'm interested in Houghton's others novels now. They look just as fascinating--if not more!

message 44: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I just got to an interesting part so hoping to finish by tomorrow!

message 45: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I'm starting to think that this is some kind of social experiment, like scriv is God watching the whole thing from up above. How awful!

message 46: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Alright guys! Dish it out as I'm not too sure I feel the same as you two do about this book. I just don't think I was satisfied with the ending.

message 47: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I think this book might have deserved a sequel since scriv appears at the end. It just didn't feel complete. As much as I enjoyed getting to know these characters, I felt it dragged in some places and I was anticipating some big reveal or something sinister to just "wow" me and it didn't happen. Because of that, I'm gonna give it a 3. I did enjoy it, however, and would give him another shot if the opportunity came, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to read another even if they sound so good, which they do:)

message 48: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I completely agree with you Nolan.

message 49: by Maxine Marsh (new)

Maxine Marsh | 737 comments I have to say I liked the way the book ended. Scrivener arriving in the last paragraph wasn't the ending, the climax occurred when James figures out what Scrivener's purpose with all the people has been. The irony is that the end of the book leaves the reader with the exact feeling that each of the characters wanted from Scrivener himself...what is the great answer embodied by Scrivener? What is the great mystery? Where's the magnificent climax? Thats the brilliance of the novel and that's the whole point that James makes as he realizes that Scrivener was just magnifying each character back to themselves. It was never about Scrivener or some answer. It's about the great expectation we seek in something else when it's ourselves we need to confront. That's my takeaway.

message 50: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Great way to summarize it! I also feel that way, but I just wasn't satisfied. For me, this book is something I'm not used to reading. I guess I was expecting the usual mystery, when instead I got something more literary and something more profound. I definitely appreciate that, it's just not something I'm sure I'll revisit. I'm glad I got to read it with you guys though!
