Spencer | 18 comments In chapter 4, Nature, Bella wakes up to find that Edward is gone, but he left a note saying he would return soon. With her Saturday now open, she finds she has a lot of spare time without Edward there. She begins to line up magnets in the refrigerator. Two on the end will not stick together because of their polarity. They kept pushing away from each other. Bella eventually ripped them of the fridge and shoved them together admitting that, "they were strong enough to put up a fight - but [she] forced them to coexist side-by-side" (96). This seemingly insignificant event was actually an allegory to the feud between Jacob and Edward. Bella is the only thing that can bring them together. She is like the glue for them and their kinds, but first she has to force them together. This is not easy, but she is so important to both of them that love trumps hate in the end. I love it when authors throw in allegories because they are usually hidden, unless the author specifically points them out. It's almost like a treasure hunt trying to see the connections that authors tie into their books.
