Urban fantasy series. The main character is female. She has some special ability that's like astral projection? She is hired to find information regularly and is watched over by her mother(?) and a friend. Turns out the friend is actually a researcher of some sort, I think...

Try the Zoe Chronicles by Phaedra Weldon. Specter, Wraith and Revenant are three books in the series. That might be like the book you are looking for.
