I think I would be too scared to listen to an audiobook of a Stephen King novel.

It's pretty scary to do when you're driving alone at night for several hours. In retrospect, I should have stuck with Jane Austen for that drive!

I listened to Under the Dome and it was pretty good. the others I'll read.

Misery is pretty good too.

I got Dr Sleep tonight and didn't realise until I got home that it's the sequel to The Shining. Will it be confusing without first reading The Shining?

Start at the beginning: Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand. Those 4 are non-negotiable. Then work your way forward with as many as you deem interesting. Personally, I would make sure to include: Different Seasons, IT, Misery, The Green Mile, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, On Writing and 11/22/63. There are many other good works in between there but each person will gravitate toward different books. Personally, I don't care for the Dark Tower series, but you'll find most of King's fans will list them as their favorites. And don't discount his many collections of short stories - there's some good, juicy stuff there as well.

I started with The Shining, then Pet Semetary and then Cujo. I want to read Carrie but haven't gotten around to it yet but I loved Cujo and The Shining. Pet Semetary wasn't quite as good IMO but still worth reading.

I tried both It and Carrie but they got boring for me so I gave up. I also am not reading Cujo because I am scared of dogs in real life and don't want to have nightmares. LOL.

When I first started Stephen King I got into his books with The Eyes of the Dragon and Cycle of the Werewolf then got into a few short story collections with The Stand, Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary as they are all pretty good. The Green Mile and Misery are great too. I only read a few King a year and last year listened to the audiobook Under the dome which was better than the TV show too.

This is probably a very old topic, but my all-time favorite King book is Misery, but The Shining is also amazing.
