Great list, by the way!!

I decided if I'm really anal about comments admist my list, I will just cut and paste all my entries into a new thread in this folder and have Bonnie's Book Challenge 2.0 or whatever, so no worries about the comment.
It's obviously heavily weighted toward the 20th & 21st Century (with an assist from the 19th) because my interest in pre-19th century lit is pretty slim. Plus, there are just a whole lot more books around from the past couple centuries.
For the 21st Century stuff, I aimed for books that were on lots of "best" lists or popular with the critics. Books that were critical hits or aimed for high-brow, even if I thought they were lame and often boring (that's right, I'm talking about you The Historian) made the cut. Books that were wildly successful and inexplicably on best lists but I felt were crap didn't (yeah, you, Da Vinci Code; I'm still mad at you for making me believe the myth that Friday the 13th unluckiness has to do with the Templar destruction, as well as pretensions that you were anything other than pulp fluff). My list, my rules.
I also aimed for a more international scope in the list for the 20th & 21st centuries, as a lot of really good books by international authors are available nowadays (as opposed to earlier centuries, where the works are either untranslated or hard to get through: ancient/medieval Western lit is painful enough; medieval whatever else lit sounds like as much fun as setting myself on fire...although I at least try to pay lip service to it and will maybe try to find abridged versions...or graphic novel versions).
Last thought: 1001 is a LOT of books. I've only listed about 500 so far and I'm wondering if there are really over 500 more thought-provoking/critcally aclaimed/classic books out there that I want to read.
Where I got the books for this list (some of them):
Booker Prize Winners and Nominees
Pulitzer Prize Winners
The Modern Library: The 200 Best Novels in English Since 1950
1001 Books To Read Before You Die, Broken Down by Decade on Jennifer's Amazing Blog
Waterstone's Top 100 Books of the Century
Newsweek's Top 100 Books
Update (12/17): Currently at nearly 450 books on the list. No wonder the authors of the original 1001 list included so many weird books (including ones with no English translation!)...finding 1001 books is really hard. Afraid of eventually having to include books I don't want just to pad the list.
