It sounds like it to me, from what I remember of the book - though it's been a long time since I've read it.

From what I remember, (view spoiler)[ The 'bag of bones' was the child of a woman/slave/shanty town resident who lived on the island X amount of years ago. The mother haunted the area until her child was found. The main love interest in the story was the daughter-in-law of the millionaire. When the son married her he went against his father's wishes and was leaving the family business. He died suddenly and she had nowhere to turn but to her father in law whose intentions are to take his grandchild and raise the child 'his way'. (hide spoiler)]
