Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Have at last given in and got a new computer, but I hate the cheap Sumvision keyboard with it. I like the wireless bit, but it is rubbish to type on, as it's too flat and the keys are really soft. It'll play havoc with my wrists if I do much typing.
Any suggestions for a good wireless keyboard for 'proper' typists please?

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments You can't go wrong with a mechanical keyboard, but they tend to be expensive, noisy and rarely wireless. If you don't mind the cable this one is lovely to type on:

However if you do want a wireless one, Microsoft do some nice models. Your best bet is to mosey on down to Staples or PC World and give them a bash.

Will have a look in Staples.

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments If its something you want to feel comfortable with you'll often find display models over at Staples. Ive always found shopping for that stuff hard online as I know I'll only end up sending it back for not feeling right.

Andrew Barrett | 1537 comments Oh yes, I think it's very important to try them out in a shop. I'd never buy something like that online without having a play about with one first.

I use a plain old Microsoft keyboard and wireless mouse, and the keyboard is so comfy that I've worn most of the keys smooth now.

One thing I would dearly like to do is customise the keys' position. For example, the number pad on the right is sufficient for digits that I do not want a row of numbers across the top too. I would rather have them exclusively for '!,",(...' etc, rather than pressing 'shift' all the time. I looked into it once but couldn't figure out to do it, hey ho.

Let us know how you get along.

Michelle (Spiderg1rl) (spiderg1rl) | 734 comments Andrew I've never seen a keyboard like that but that would be cool, that or you press shift to get the common 1-0 saving time, although it would probably be a selective user item as touch typists may not find it convient and casual users may struggle to remember.

Saying that I'd buy one.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments I use a wireless Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments I have to confess, I decided to pinch the keyboard from my Other Half's computer, which is not wireless, but it's like my old one so I can type ok on it :)
He's got the wireless one in exchange. And he's welcome to it. He doesn't type much anyway.

Jemima Pett | 48 comments I've got a logitech keyboard that I got from Staples - I sat and tried them all, which amused some passersby. It hasnt got a separate numeric pad, but it does have an integral mousepad - which has the usual buttons below the pad but an extra 'click' button on the left of the keyboard, which is really useful.
The option for a left-handed mousepad would have been even nicer, but you can't have everything, I suppose - especially for not much money (I forget how much, but £30 rings a bell)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments I was after a new laptop, then decided I wanted an IPad with keyboard. In the shop I tried that side by side with a Microsoft Surface Tablet. Bought the tablet on the spot. Runs office so perfect for writing. Comes with snap on snap off keyboard. Tablet when I want to waste time looking at photos, news, Facebook etc. Proper laptop when I want to type.... like now.

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments Which Surface did you go for, the pro or standard one? We tested the former at work last month to replace our Mac Book and iPad combos which are irritating the IT dept with their glued in innards (apparently). Everyone seemed to like it especially the screen which is quite brilliant, although there were two different keyboard covers tested, one with clicky keys which was ace and one with touchy ones which was a bit of a faff.

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Pro. Clicky keys. Genius. We use iPad at work. God knows which idiot fell for that one. Totally unproductive. We have all the senior managers basically using an iPad to look at their calendars and agendas. But they can't do anything else.
The surface works like a normal laptop i.e. office, IE etc. Keyboard is great. I use it to write books, wife uses it for essays and even right now.
But then in bed or whatever, snap off the keyboard and it's a tablet. Lot's cheaper than iPad too.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've got a wireless iPad keyboard collecting dust in the flat. Only tried it out once and didn't like it. I prefer poking at the screen with one finger.

The iPad clicks into a holder with the keyboard below so it looks like a laptop.

If anyone wants it, let me know. I can send it when were in the UK at the end of June.
