Nesbø describes a man who is a member of a Norwegian faction of the Waffen S. S., a elite military regiment for Nazi Germany. The Norwegians were basically captured and then agreed to work for the Nazis in order to avoid harsher treatment. Most of this part of the story is a deep and highly descriptive account of the raid on Lenningrad, RU. The norwegians describe the firefight across vast planes of snow and ice, and the terrible conditions in the trenches. After their trench and bunkers get raided, some of the friends of this man (who remains un-named) are killed by the russians while they are sleeping. He then kills the russians with his bayonet and lets the rest of the Norwegians into Leningrad to hide in the buildings, and work towards their mission. It all seems very cool, with their descriptions of snipers, and having to snipe them. Joe Nesbø provides an unbelievable amount of imagery when describing the emotions of these men as they experience war. He is an outstanding writer, and this historical allusion is a great example of it.
