Can someone please help me describe why I hated this book so much?

Alexander makes the character of Emily (AKA Kallista - oh please! spare me!) so incredibly dis-likable I am amazed I made it through the book. She's selfish and self-absorbed and, let's not forget, incredibly beautiful as all heroines are supposed to be. Maybe that's why Jane Eyre is my favorite book.

Susan, you didn't miss much

I hated it for the same reasons you did. But I didn't make it through the book - a rare occurrence for me. Even more rare, I didn't bother to skim to the end either.

Susan I picked And only to deceive because I enjoy 'complex' (or at least 'strong') female characters. In that vein, I do enjoy:

I loved the book and I loved Lady Emily Ashton. She was a little self absorbed, but in a very innocent way. She wanted to experience a free life which women couldn't do too often back then. So I begrudge her no lacking in character. In fact, I thought her character clever and fun.

Completely agreed with your assessment of the book. Didn't do anything for me either. Just need to add a complete of judgment to the mix...

I felt exactly the same way! I think you nailed it.

Well, it was kind of dull, and for a fan of 'happily ever after' like me... well lets just say I didn't finish it.
