I read a LOT but lately nothing seems to "draw me in." I'm looking for a deep, non-YA, non-paranormal series that I won't want to put down. Something I can't wait to get back to. Any recommendations?

Again I read a lot so Ice and Fire, Discworld, Sword of Truth, Dark Materials, Wheel of Time, Mistborn, Gunslinger, Magician series plus a few others are already checked off.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Michele Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel books, C.J. Cherryh's Fortress books, Jennifer Roberson's Shapeshifter series are all good.
I see also you've read some Michael Crichton, you might enjoy the Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child - the first book, Relic, is a bit rough but they just get better and better.

Have you read Malazan Book of the Fallen (and the related series?) If not, that should give you about 17 bricks books to read. And Erikson has started a new one.

Martha (tilla) | 194 comments Amen to Pendergast. If you are okay with something shorter - give Carol Berg or Jane Fancher a go. Anne Bishop has a Dark Jewels series i enjoyed

I read the first Malazan, but couldn't get into it for some reason. All of the elements are there so I'm not quite sure why :)

Adding Pendergast to my to-read, thanks

I understand. :)

I avoided for years, myself.

Luke I've heard that it takes 2-3 books to get into Malazan, but I've only made it halfway through the first one myself.

I loved the first book (only one I've read) but it was hella confusing. It's totally out of my typical choices but something about it grabbed me.

TBH, I was expecting to hate it because I'm very hipster about popular books.

From a person who did finish Malazan: you really need to read first two books to figure out whether the series is for you as the first book is quite different from the rest of the series. It is not for everybody; while it receives glowing reviews practically everywhere some people do not like it at all and some (myself included) are underwhelmed by it.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 325 comments What about the Inheritance Trilogy and the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series?

The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
The Innocent Mage but there's also a full length prequel: A Blight of Mages.

message 13: by Luke (new)

Luke I understand the hipster thing. Except for Sanderson, I'm an unabashed fangirl where he's concerned lol.

The thing that attracts me to it is the length of the series. But I'm just not ready for that much time commitment yet, especially since it's very heavy reading based on what I've heard.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 325 comments A lot of people really like Janny Wurts' War of Light and Shadow: The Curse of the Mistwraith

I am not sure if you read any of the following, but they are worth at least looking into:

* Amber by Roger Zelazny
* Black Company by Glen Cook
* Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan

Jake m (atticus55) | 12 comments Based on your books listed I would recommend The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks.

message 17: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Tullis (nathantullis) Definitely check out both Riyria and Night Angel. Both really good series. You may want to look into the Runelords series by David Farland.

I second this recommendation. It's one of the best series I've read recently.

if you like UF then you can try Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

DavidO (drgnangl) Sayan, here's some ideas for you:

The Name of the Wind

Blood Song

The Gunslinger

The Magicians' Guild

The Dragon's Path

Maybe one of those will spark your interest.

Sayan, the Sword of Truth series is great by Goodkind. Wizard's First Rule is the first book in the series. It gets a bit weird at the end of the first book though - you have been warned lol

you should check "the lies of locke lamora". its an amazing high fantasy series with one of the best world-building i'v yet to read. great charcters as well. great plot. really, everything is great.

message 24: by Michele (new)

Michele Maybe Elizabeth Haydon's Symphony of Ages series or Sara Douglass Wayfarer's Redemption trilogy.

message 25: by Kevin (new)

Kevin A trial of blood and steel quartet by Joel Shepherd. Female protag, low magic setting, lots of swordplay and battles, and a relatively complex and grey portrayal of morality and politics in war (especially the later books) without falling into Grimdark territory. It's a 4 book series and it's finished; first book: Sasha

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Some of my original favorite books are by Jennifer Roberson Jennifer Roberson .
She is currently writing a series of which the first book is called Karavans.
Her Cheysuli Chronicles are finished; first book Shapechangers.
Or if you prefer....her Tiger and Del series...(might not be done)
First book Sword-Dancer.

message 28: by Sayan (new)

Sayan Oh and I read The Emperor's Blades,Blood Song and The promise of Blood..very promising series..excellent...anyone know good upcoming books in April and May?

message 29: by Marcus (new)

Marcus I would have to third Brent weeks night angel series. I would definitely recommend to a fan of epic fantasy, but doesn't want that typical fantasy story.... ( boy gets power, prophecy about power, boy kills dark lord.) this has some of that but the main plot line is more about the character growth. so it will have a different and darker feel than other fantasy books.

The other book I would recommend is eon / eona. can't remember authors name, but it is epic fantasy with a oriental/ Asian feel. it's about a cripple girl who imitates being a boy to gain power to dragoneye. warning it start s slow and the first book is predictable but entertaining. and it has a ya feel. but it is still a very entertaining read.
