The nominations thread for our April Classics read is now open. It will remain open until Monday 3rd March and then close for voting.

This month is the turn of any classic novel published AFTER 1900.

The Plague was the previous runner up in this category, so goes through to voting automatically without needing to be seconded.

Please add your nominations below. They will need to be seconded by someone else in order to be put forward for voting and please check that your suggestion is readily available in all formats.

Have you seen the film version of this novel, with Colin Firth? I saw it a few months ago - was very moving.

message 4: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I'm going to nominate Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

I picked up a copy a few weeks ago in a book sale when our local bookshop was closing down. It would be a re-read for me, but I haven't read it since I was at school.

I met a guy down the pub who'd NEVER read it before! I gave him my paperback about 2 weeks ago.

Has he read it yet? Hope he gives you some feedback on it. It's probably the most disturbing novel I've ever read.

I love that film, Colin Firth is hauntingly fabulous.

Well he has read some of it and says it's good. I don't think it's the most disturbing novel I've ever read, but I read it first as a young teenager, and we all know kids are some of the most evil bastards alive, and took it all with a grain of salt.

Charlotte (charley_100) | 322 comments Ahhh! lots of likes for the film but no seconder! the film was great..Colin Firth was ace

message 12: by Elizabeth (last edited Mar 01, 2014 05:06AM) (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I don't think anything has been seconded yet! We'd better stop chatting about the books and get down to the business of nominations and seconding them :) Otherwise it will be The Plague, by default!

To summarise, we need seconds for:-

A Single Man
Lord of the Flies
Howards End and
The Diary of Anne Frank

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan (suze0501) | 190 comments Shouldn't Anne Frank be in the non-fiction reads?

message 14: by Elizabeth (last edited Mar 01, 2014 09:31AM) (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) It could be classified as either, Susan. We have allowed non-fiction to be nominated for classics before, and we are not having a non-fiction nomination for April. So, it's allowed.

message 22: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Morris Burgess (kateemo) George Eliot anyone? Silas Marner.

message 23: by Susan (new)

Susan (suze0501) | 190 comments Possibly my favourite Eliot, Kathryn - such a sweet and gentle tale - and all the right people get their come-uppance! Sadly I've already seconded :(

message 24: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Kathryn wrote: "George Eliot anyone? Silas Marner."

Sorry Kathryn, it's the turn of post 1900 for April, but feel free to put it forward again for May, when it will be pre 1900 novels :)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.

message 26: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Morris Burgess (kateemo) Oh, whoops! I will re-nominate after May. It's on the syllabus for Cambridge GCSEs, i haven't read it in years and would love a grown-up chat about it before marking this summer. Everything's been seconded, but of those on the list already, i would have seconded Howard's End.

message 27: by ❦Dawn❦ (new)

❦Dawn❦ (sunnyd1) I would like to suggest we read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey by Ken Kesey

Angela I second Stoner.

Kathryn, I'd like to re-read Silas Marner, too!
