Lindsay (sspotz) | 3 comments Hi, so about 4 maybe 5 years back I read a book that I can't remember the title of. All I can remember is that it was about a 13 year old girl who had a mother that was either mentally ill or had a problem with her brain. She was primarily taken care of by their next door neighbor (who I think was named Bernie). The neighbor entered into their apartment through a door that joined both of them because she had a phobia and couldn't go outside, due to the fact that her father had died when they were driving home one day. The girl's grandmother had come with her and her mother, but had been killed in a car accident. She was just a baby at the time, and her mom had just kept waking until accidentally entering thw neighbor (Bernie's) apartment. The only thing her mom would say was the word 'soof'. She wanted to find out why, an to find out what happened, so she takes the buses all the way to New York, until she reaches the place (for those with brain disabilities) that her mother had grown up at. She then finds out about her grandmother, meets he father ( who also has a disability) and finds her grandfather. She finds out the her father says 'soof' also and beloved that it means love. When she returns home, her mother has died and she attends a funeral. She leaves juicy fruit by her mother's grave because they were her favorite, and the book ends. I can pretty much remember the entire plot, I just can't remember the name or author. If it helps, the book cover was the sky with a red kite or balloon floating in it. I would greatly appreciate any help.
