message 1: by Alice (new)

Alice Mclaren | 5 comments I'm excited to be here. I've been reading mysteries since eight years of age when I found Nancy Drew mysteries. I graduated to Agatha Christie, then Conan Doyle and Mary Stewart. I've read many authors since and enjoyed most of them and they inspired me to write my own. But that's not why I'm here. I want to find new authors and enjoy great company.

Welcome, Alice! I got my crime start with Nancy Drew too. I always wanted to be a detective when I was a kid.

Dipanjan | 44 comments @ Nancy - I was in the opposite camp. The Hardy Boys.

I read all of those too!

Dipanjan | 44 comments @ Nancy - OMG. Seriously? You are now the first discovered spy from the Nancy Drew Camp to have infiltrated into the HBC.

Don Satalic (donsatalic) | 135 comments Welcome Alice,

For a change you might try Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich, Elmore Leonard, or (my favorite) Jim Thompson.

message 8: by Bill (new)

Bill Welcome to the group, Alice. I preferred Nancy Drew as well. Enjoy the discussions.

Beth (jasonverlander) | 39 comments I also liked both Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. I was made for mystery apparently. Welcome to the group!

I just finished the last original Marlowe novel -- great stuff.

Have you read "The Little Sister" by Chandler?

I've now read them all, in order. Next to the Martin Beck series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, the Marlowe novels are probably my favorites in the crime world.

Jon Kurtz (jondkurtz) | 132 comments Sorry for dropping backwards in the conversation, but I grew up with the Hardy Boys, a few installments of Nancy Drew (Don't tell anyone else), and the Three Investigators. It was a much simpler time. Welcome!

I think I read Hammett and Chandler some years ago. I'll try them again and your other recommendations. My tastes have broadened over the years so I should try these authors again. Thanks, Don!

I LOVED The Three Investigators. I still have old original copies around here somewhere.

For me, Jim Thompson is just in a class by himself.

Nancy - I haven't seen any copies of the Three Investigators in years. When my kids were growing up (15 years ago), we read the Hardy Boys aloud each night. As a result, the whole series is boxed and waiting for the next generation.

I'm a total pack rat, so I saved my childhood books to read to my kids. Now I have my old books and the books I bought for them, also waiting for that next generation!
