Sandy Chapter LXIII:
"Oh, well," he said. "It seems we've been at cross purposes, doesn't it? But it doesn't matter now. ....... When you were sick and it was all my fault, I stood outside your door, hoping you'd call for me, but you didn't, and then I knew what a fool I'd been and that it was all over."
Chapter LVI:
Whenever Scarlett opened her eyss, she said "Melly?" and the voice answered. And usually she started to whisper:"Rhett-I want Rhett", and remembered, as from a dream, that Rhett didn't want her, ...... She wanted him and he didn't want her.

=====
Actually they DID want each other at the same time, but they didn't know, they had thought themselves were not wanted! :(

Mrsbooks I don't think a book has ever touched me more than Gone with the Wind. I think about the ending for months after I've read it. The way Scarlet and Rhett's relationship plays out, the "cross purposes" the horrible things they say to each other, the love they let die. The ending is so emotional it feels like a roller-coaster ride.

zuba I agree with Mrsbooks. This scene particularly was saddest. Just to know that they both loved each other so much but let their egos stand in the way and in the end just lost it all.:(

Same here, although I've finished reading Gone with the Wind and started another book, I still take Gone with the Wind off the book shelf and read it again and again.

Lala Rose That scene was heartbreaking. Mrsbooks, your observation that they let love die is very profound. People do it every day with less literary grandeur. I know.

Etain I read this book years ago and have no desire to do so again. I felt no connection to the characters, but thought that the atmosphere of the Deep South was depicted with sensitivity.

Trang I read Gone with the wind two years ago, I usually didnt read such a long story but I managed to read it all and i just felt Scarlett and Rhett were too stubborn to admit that they wanted each other so bad, and I felt like Rhett had to suffer a lot whenhe was in a relationship with Scarlett... And the ending was also really sad, but no one could stop Scarlett from being stubborn and rebellious, even at the end...

Same here. Every time I read this book, I end up with a broken heart. It's so sad that I can't even describe it. My heart literally aches. But I still think it's a perfect ending.
